Austria research -Gardner sisters
« on: Wednesday 17 October 18 20:06 BST (UK) »
My gt. grandmother had 2 sisters who both married in Vienna.
The first was Laura Gardner b. Maidstone 1850 who according to family search married Hugo Jerzabek on 20/3/1893.
The second was Emmeline Gardner b. 1851 in Maidstone. We have a photo taken by a Viennese photographer and on the reverse someone has written Emmeline and Professor Cusack.
Can anyone tell me what resources there are for further research?

There are quite a few resources for Austria on Cyndi's List. I haven't checked them out.

Hi Carom

The churchbooks of Vienna are online, but you need to know which part of the city they lived in.
http://data.matricula-online.eu/de/oesterreich/wien/

Familysearch has register cards for people who lived at Vienna and the Jewish Comunity registers.

You said you found it already but did you look at the original image? There is mentionned Laura's place of birth as Maidstone. Hugo Jerzabek was born in Brünn/Mähren, maybe you should also search there.

Another source for Vienna is the website of the Library of Vienna (with the Lehmann address directories 1859-1942)
https://www.digital.wienbibliothek.at/

Another source for Vienna and Austria is the newspapers collection of the Austrian National Library.

Thank you for the replies, this is my first venture into Austrian records so I'm grateful for the leads.
I did look at the original entry for Hugo Jerzabek and Laura, but despite having studied German many years ago, was having difficulty deciphering the handwriting. I think the cert. shows he was a manufacturer of some sort.I'll go back and look again.

Hi Carom

I think he was a Leinwand-Fabrikant and he lived at Mariahilfer-Strasse 81 in the VI District of Vienna.
I didn't find him in the Lehmann City directories of 1892, 1893 and 1894, but I didn't look at later years.
Laura lived at Nibelungengasse 7 in the I District of Vienna at the time of her marriage.

Hi Svenja,
Thanks for the extra info. Can I ask if you can make out what Laura's occupation was?
Caro

Hi Carom

I think I have finally found a death notice for Laura Jerzabek, but not in Vienna or Austria.
In a newspaper of Geneva, Switzerland, the "Journal de Genève" of July 11, 1899, I found this:

Décès: Laura Jerzabek, marié, 50 ans, Autriche-Hongrie
Death: Laura Jerzabek, married, age 50, Austria-Hungary

Hi Svenja,
Thank you once again, I would never have found that.
