What is this rank?
« on: Thursday 18 October 18 14:20 BST (UK) »
No military connections so apologies if I don't explain this well.  I've found a Sergeant listed on Form H for the 1901 census, Royal Barracks in Arran Quay Dublin.  There are 3 other sergeants listed after his name but the entry for my man says Co Sgt.....what does this mean?

thank you

Without doubt - Colour Sergeant.  Usually written Col Sgt.  He out-ranks the others hence they are listed below him.

Thank you so much....with my very limited knowledge,  Colour and Company sergeant popped into my head.  What is the difference?

Company sergeant major is a rank, above colour sgt, also known as CSM or more formally as Warrant Officer, Second Class.  I’ve not heard of a Comany Sergeant.

Correct. There is no Company Sergeant which is why you haven't heard of it.

For the purist/pedant -  Warrant Officer Class 2 (used to be written Class II) is the rank within which there are a number of appointments, Company Sergeant Major is one of them, another is Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant, there are a number of others.
