Credit to Jomot who succeeded where I had failed initially to find the partial record.

Additional enquiries suggest that it may have been 38 Company MGC that he was transferred to. 6 East Lancs and 38 Coy were both in 38 Brigade.  Can't be definitive though.  There was also a 3rd Indian Machine Gun Battalion in that theatre of war.
