Headstones Missing Woolwich and Plumstead Graveyard
« on: Saturday 20 October 18 17:19 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I have just spent a rather frustrating morning searching for ancestor graves in both Woolwich and Plumstead graveyards in London. Deceased on line gave me plot details but neither headstones were there. Is this because headstones are removed after a certain time period? Was it usual to have a headstone or could they have done without one? My great great grandfather died in 1892 and my great great aunt in 1936. I'm wondering if its worth my while searching for other family members in the same area. Any info would help.

Thanks

Liz

You have to remember that not everyone could afford a headstone - there were, perhaps, other more important things to spend money on.  :-\

Have you tried to contact the cemeteries to see whether they have any additional information to that obtained from deceasedonline.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks for the reply. I will contact the cemetery - good idea.

Lots of older graves did not seem to be there. I was wondering if they are removed after 100 years - can you only buy a plot for limited amount of time? There was the odd older grave but most didn't go back beyond the 1920s even though the cemetery was opened in 1885.

Just wondering...
