1901 Leftovers: Difficult to interpret ... what to do ??
« on: Tuesday 16 August 05 20:01 BST (UK) »
Can someone tell me what to put if I can't read a name, a birthplace or (in this case) an occupation? I transcribe for FreeBMD and I have currently used underscores where some letters can't be read (there is a huge black cross right through the middle of the occupation, I can read the first 2 and the last 2 letters, but they don't give a clue as to the whole word.  ???

Thanks, Veron

Actually I think I've worked it out - I think it says Plumber (see the P in Plumstead on the same page for comparison) - anyone agree with me?

Hi Veron,

Pretty definitely Plumber.

But, as a FreeCEN transcriber (is this what you are doing in this instance), I think I'd flag it (with a note to the effect that it looks like Plumber) so that the Checker and Validator can have a second look and then decide.

Cheers,

JAP

Can anyone help with the attached?  I have some 1901 census ready to send but cannot read the first name on this list. I checked it out on Ancestry and that says it is Aasta Inglis.  Doesn't convince me.  I thought surname was Bylis and have no idea what first name is.  First letter does look like an A written further down page.

Also what about 3rd surname?  Is it Fenner or Femer or ?

I would have said the surname was something Inglis. I don't think that first letter is a B, but is there another B elsewhere on the page to compare with? I was tempted to think that the other name was Alister until I realised it's a woman.... but I think it ends in ...ter - could it be a misspelling for Esther?

And I think the other surname is Fenner, it's a tricky one though.

Any help?

I'll go for Inglis and Fenner. At least if the surname is right there is a chance anyone searching will find it.

Hi

It could be a misspelling of Clara or Carla.
