Mary Ann Williams 1839 Llanarth
« on: Wednesday 17 August 05 12:24 BST (UK) »
If anybody has parish records for Llanarth then I'd really appreciate some help tracking down the family of Mary Ann Williams, born circa 1839 in Llanarth.

I know from her marriage certificate that her father was William Williams (how many of those are there in the census records??!!) who was a cabinet maker - he was a witness, along with another Mary Ann Williams, who I guess may have been my Mary's mother.  I have been searching for this William Williams on the 1861 census without any luck - they're all either farmers or agricultural labourers - no cabinet makers!  Mary was married in May 1861 to George Cobner.

If anyone could find William in the 1861, 1851 or 1841 census then I'd be extremely grateful.  A record of Mary's birth/baptism would be great, and any information on her parent's marriage would be utterly brilliant!!

Thanks, Julie

Hi Julie,
I'll have a look in the 1841 for Llanarth.   The census is not indexed so it may take a little time.   There aren't as many William Williams as John Jones  ???

Hi Dave

Since posting this request I have managed to find William and family on the 1841 - they are in Llanfoist village - William is 50, married to Jemima, 30, with 4 children at the time.  Hopefully I will have caught you before you start searching through the entries!  A search on the LDS site indicated that William Williams married a Jemima ... Williams (I swear, this surname is sending me nuts!) on 25th May 1826 in Llanhennock.  Now I need to find someone with access to parish records for Llanennock to see if there's any extra information there - I'll scream if it turns out her father was called William too, ha ha!

Thanks anyway for offering to trawl the 1841 census for me
Regards Julie

Hi Julie,
Too late  ;D.   To further confuse, this looks like them in 1841..........

HO107/1375/11, Enum Dist 4, p8
Parish of Llanarth, Township of Hir Hamlet, adress - Gineva.
All but one surnames Williams, all born in county

William    45     Carpenter
Mary       age possibly 30, it's very indistinct
Margaret   15
Evan         14
John       10

Also at the same address

Thomas     60  Blacksmith
Eleanor     60
Thomas     25  Blacksmith
Ann Jones  20
Betty Thomas  1

Where is Llanennock - it is not a Welsh spelling (I don't think the letter 'k' is in the Welsh alphabet) is it Llangranog?   Let me know if it's in Cardiganshire and I'll have a look .

Hi Dave

Thanks again for looking, but as I said, I think I have the right family on the 1841 census (in Llanfoist village).

For reference - I found Llanhennock on my map, between Pontypool and Newport, just below Newbridge on Usk.  This fits in with other locations associated with my ancestors - I presume it will be in Monmouthshire but as I am not well-informed on Welsh counties I'm not certain.  It took me a while to discover that all Monmouthshire entries on the LDS site are to be found under England rather than Wales - I assume there have been some boundary changes since the seventeenth century?

Thanks again for your interest - I would appreciate any suggestions you could offer for the best place to look for the parish registers for Llanhennock.

Diolch, hwyl fawr, Julie

Julie:

If you see this message, I wonder if you are able to link George Cobner to Elizabeth Cobner (dates approx 1863-1901, Abergavenny). Any information about her family would be welcome.

Thanks.
