This is the 1st of 5 very special photos of my husbands grandfather/grandmother that he has not seen before. I have only received them today and he is very emotional. Can you improve the quality? I will have a go but I'm sure you will do better.

Here is my first/quick attempt ... ;)

Phot is quite light with a flat tone .. needed to get a bit more detail out of it  so created a duplicate layer with "Blending Mode" set to "Multiply" which effectively darkens every pixel by 100% (hence the term multiply)..

This brought out a much better contrast and detail ..

Then adjusted levels

Finally applied a little un-sharp mask to again bring a bit of definition ..

Finally used shadow/highlight to try bring out some of the left hand side of the face ..

I am being a bit dense but:

sharpen makes the image sharper
unsharp mask seems to make the image sharper

Am I missing something?

Jane ... Following on from deadant's link ... the main reason to use "Unsharp" (well at least in Photoshop) is the fact that it gives you total control over the level of sharpening ... because it gives you a pop-up window with several configuration settings ... and a "preview" of the effect .. so you can experiment whilst looking at the image in question ...

Most of the other sharpening type filters just do it ... with no control ...

As for the name ... I did see a good explanation of the name Unsharp somewhere .. but cannot remember where ... ::)
