Dalbeth Cemetary - where is it?
« on: Monday 22 August 05 05:48 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have just found that one of my ancestors, James Docherty died December, 1855 and was buried in Dalbeth Cemetery, Glasgow.  I have looked at old maps and have done a search on the internet, but can find no clue as to where it might be, other than someone on another board saying it was on London Road, Tollcross (can't find that on the old maps) and that it has a new name now, but he didn't know what!

Can anyone help please?

Thanks for reading,

Nina

Nina It's still known as Dalbeth, but it's also known as St Peters.

I have recently been working on records of this cemetery and can tell you
that there is a film of the Burial Register 1851- 1956 on microfilm in the
Mitchell Library in Glasgow (if you don't know were the grave is). The Mitchell is closed until the 5 sept, they should have a Burial Register at St Peter's. I just found more time to look at it in the Mitchell Library

St Peter's RC Cemetery
(Dalbeth Cemetery)
1900 London Road

Thanks bankie,

I was born in Glasgow, but I have been in Australia since I was a child, so I can't visit the library or the cemetery, much as I'd love to :( .  His wife Margaret could be there too, although she died in 1885, a good thirty years after him.  I just wanted to know where it was on a map to familiarise myself to its whereabouts; kinda get a picture in my head.

Thanks again,

Nina

Hi Jo

The burial records for St Peters Dalbeth are held at the Archdiocese, Clyde St and not at the cemetery itself and as long as you give the exact date of death then they will not charge you for a search.

I was also told that the Mitchell only holds the burial records up until 1937 so have I been misinformed?

If you go to this link and click on the map. You will see the River Clyde, follow it up until you see were it comes back on itself. You should see Belvidere hospital. Just down from that is St Peter's RC Cemetery, beside Dalbeth convent.

Thanks for that map Joe...It seems a long way from their residence.  They lived in Rottenrow Street at the time, and it would have been a fair hike to go visit the grave site, particularly when other Catholics were able to be buried in the Necropolis, weren't they?

I wonder if they buried him there because of money problems or something?
