Tanner in Publow
« on: Saturday 27 August 05 16:05 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me how to find out whereabouts in the parish of Publow a tannery is likely to have been.

I am tracing Isaac Harris, a tanner of Publow who died there in 1832 leaving a will.  He had six children, Isaac and Sophia (don't know where they were baptised) and then Ishmael, Ezekiel, Cleopas and Sarah who were baptised at Pensford Methodist chapel between 1803 and 1813.

Hi Ireneb

If you click on this link http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/maps/os62htm/1208.htm  it takes you to a map of Publow.  There is a disused Tannery illustrated on there, slightly above the W in Publow.  The map is circa 1900, the hamlet looks like Wollard?  Maybe this it, can't help with the people sorry.

Search Woollard, the tannery is marked on the 1887-91 map.

Cheers Jan ;)

Hello there - I was in Publow yesterday looking for the Methodist chapel mentioned at the start of this thread but had no joy. Also, it's not on the map referred to earlier. Any ideas on how to locate it?

Hello, Irene

We are related through the Harris family. My ggdad was Charles, son of John Cleopas.  I'd very much like your view on hints I'm getting that there are Jewish origins in the Harris / Harries family.

Regards, Steve Buckley, Cumbria

Hello, lovely to hear from you.  I have heard similar rumours but have no evidence one way or the other.  Both Methodists and Jews used Old Testament names so the peculiar names prove nothing.

I will try to work out how to send a message with my email address
