FRANCE: British Subject born in France
« on: Monday 29 August 05 17:19 BST (UK) »
How do I find a birth certificate for someone born in St Malo in 1852, he is appears on census from 1862 onwards as born in France - British Subject.

He was living in Jersey in 1861, 1871, 1881 then moved to London.

I have checked BMD on www.thegenealogist.co.uk for the relevant period but there is no record there

Hi,
You will need to contact St Malo Archives. Their web site http://www.saint-malo.fr/vivre/en/municipales-archives-en.html

Thank you.

Unfortumately I have now been told that the civic registers for this period were burnt (possibly in the war?).  Never mind, I appreciate your help.

"les registres municipaux de cette période ont brulé, et il ne reste que les registres paroissiaux; comme il est fort probable que le citoyen britannique était protestant, il ne sera pas mentionné sur les registres des paroisses catholiques"

I hope they were Catholics!

Does http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/ include the overseas birth records? It's not clear if it does (I know 1837online has them, in fact included in the '1870' records they offer for free are several other years, as those indexes have several years worth of bmds on each page).

If you can't find him there, you could always look for records of his christening in Jersey when his family returned - that may be the only record available.

There is a section for Jersey and Gurnsey and it is probably better that you repost in that section.

No they don't, this is the reply I got
"Our BMD Index does not cover overseas records on England and Wales records."
