Hello Janet
Thank you for your note. Ann Gall is my G Grandmother's sister and I am not really following that family. However you should make contact with Jim McGregor - who is part of your McGregor family

Hi Keith and Janet

These are the list of children showing to George Gall and Jean Clark, from IGI. A few gaps there, so there may have been more:

1. JANE GALL Birth: 22 JUL 1848/ Christening: 03 SEP 1848 Carmyllie, Angus, Scotland
2. WILLIAM CLARK GALL  Birth: 17 MAR 1852/ Christening: 12 APR 1852 Port Of Monteith, Perth, Scotland
3. WILLIAM GALL Birth: 31 JAN 1853/ Christening: 28 FEB 1853 Kirkden, Angus, Scotland
4. ANN GALL  Birth: 01 JUN 1854/ Christening: 01 JUL 1854 Barry, Angus, Scotland
5. MARY GALL Birth: 12 MAY 1856 Barry, Angus, Scotland
6. MARGARET LUMGAIR GALL  Birth: 22 MAR 1859 Brechin, Angus, Scotland
7. DAVID GALL  Birth: 20 JUL 1861 Drymen, Stirling, Scotland
8. GEORGE GALL Birth: 13 JUN 1863 Drymen, Stirling, Scotland
9. MAY MARTIN GALL Birth: 10 AUG 1865 Drymen, Stirling, Scotland

This looks likely for Jane Clark Gall, with George away from the home, in the 1851 Census:

Jane Gall 27, farm labourer's wife, b. Monikie, Forfarshire
Jane Gall 2, b. Carmyllie, Forfarshire
Agnes Gall 10 Mo, b. Oathlaw, Forfarshire

Address: Cotton Carrot, Inverarity, Angus

There's also a George Gall working in a farm at the Peter's household:

Geroge Gall, 27, farm labourer, b. Tannadice, Forfarshire

Address: Garth, Forfar, Angus

The index doesn't show marital status. You would need to view the original image, on Scotlands People, to confirm.

Regards.

And in 1861:

George Gall 59, shepherd, b. Inverarity, Forfarshire
Jean Gall 37, b. Monikie, Forfarshire
Jean Gall 12, b. Carmylie, Forfarshire
William Gall 9, b. Port of Menteith, Perthshire
Ann Gall 6, b. Barry, Forfarshire
Mary Gall 4, b. Barry, Forfarshire
Margaret Gall 2, b. Brechin, Forfarshire

Address: Ibert, Drymen, Stirlingshire

With George's age showing as 59, not sure if this is a transcription error on the index. If not, then the George I posted for 1851 can't be him! Again, the original image would confirm.

Regards.

Monica

Added: SP have him also indexed on the 1861 census as age 59. However, his age at death in Buchanan, Stirling in 1869 is 47....so the 1851 census entry could still be him...

Last one on the censuses  :) The best fit for George in the 1841 cens, all showing as born in the county:

George GALL, 18, agricultural labourer
Andrew Lowdon, 18, agricultural labourer
Andrew Colvile, 12, agricultural labourer

Address: Bothey Of North Mains Of Inverighty, Kinnettles, Angus

And for Jane Clark, working in a Beattie household, as a Female Servant:

Jane CLARK, 18, FS, born in the county.

Address: West Downie, Monikie, Angus

Regards.

Thanks, Monica, for all the detail. I'm descended from Ann Gall, born 1854.  Janet is descended form Ann's bother-in-law, Peter McGregor. Keith is descended from Jane Gall, born 1848.

Keith's query is a little old. After Rootsweb upgraded its Mailing List search feature late last year, I was able to find a similar query, establish our relationship and also find a query from Ian Hodges, a descendant from Mary Gall, born 1856.

I hadn't found Jane Clark in the 1841 Census. Thank you.

The 1851 Census for George Gall at Garth,Forfar has his status as Married and I've assumed that he was Jane Clark's husband. His birthplace is in the IGI as Inverarity (George Gaul, b. 07Jul1822), not Tannadice. His brother David (David Gall, ch. 11Apr1816) was from Tannadice, however.

The 1861 Census image does show George as age 59; he was 39.

The 1871 Census has Jean Gall (with Mary, Margaret, David, George and May) living as an annuitant at Tenunich, which was probably near Balmaha on the shore of Loch Lomond.

The 1881 LDS Census CDs do have a transcription error for the family. Jane Clark's birthplace is listed as Berry, Forfarshire, not Barry (of Monikie Parish). Berry was sometimes used as an abbreviation for Broughty Ferry, the home of many Galls (and Gauls and Gaulds). Some of George's siblings are listed as Gale in the IGI; the writing in the OPR  could be interpreted as either Gall or Gale. The LDS transcribers weren't the only one's to make errors. Two of David's sons came to Canada and had children/grandchildren occasionally registered as Fall or Hall. One of David's grandsons was registered as Kemp Stevens Sutherland Gall when born but the family called him Robert Alexander Stephen Gall.

Hello again
I note in your last posting that you have me descended from Jane (Jean) Gall born 1848 but my g grandmother was Mary Gall born 1856. Are you sure Ian Hodges is descended from Mary also? If so I would like to get in contact
kind regards
