Fire Brigade Records for Wellington.
« on: Wednesday 14 September 05 06:39 BST (UK) »
Does any one know of any where in New Zealand where Fire Brigade records are kept, I am trying to establish whether my Grandfather was a fireman or a volunteer in Wellington. I have him on the Wellington Central and Supplementary Roll for 1919,1922 as Alfred Searles living in Webb Street Wellington and his occupation is listed as fireman.Thanks.

Hi Jericho,

You ask some very interesting questions! ;)

I suspect that in this case, 'fireman' might indicate that he helped fuel the boilers on a ship. The coal-fuelled ships ibn those usually had lots of firemen.

I'll approach NZ Fire Service tomorrow and ask.

hi riley

Yes you might be right, I have a picture of my Grandfather standing on the Wellinton Wharf with one of his sons and one of my aunties has  told me that it was taken after he had just been to some meeting with wharfie's union about a impending strike. It would be great if I could get more information on him as I'm still trying to tie him to his earlier marriage. Thanks

Hi jericho,

Certainly sounds like he was a mariner, then. Perhaps you should try Museum of Wellington City and Sea instead, P O Box 893, Wellington to see if they can help.

I won't try NZFS for the present. Let me know.

Hi riley

got a very nice email back this morning from the Museum of Wellington City and Sea and there are no employment cards for Alfred Searles.
