Naval Dockyard at Pembroke
« on: Monday 19 September 05 05:09 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of any records relating to the Naval Dockyard and Pembroke Dock.

On the death certificate of my ancestor, Thomas HOWELL, in 1899 his occupation is given as "Superannuated Blacksmith, HM Dockyard".

If this means that he was in receipt of a pension, who would have been paying it, and would there be any surviving records related to this ?

Thanks

A couple of websites that look interesting:

http://www.gwpda.org/naval/pembroke.htm

http://www.pembrokedock.org/h_dockyard_2.htm

He would have received his pension from the government and records should be at TNA at Kew.  Ref ADM214/46 contains a History of the Dockyard dated 1895.

Little Nel - thanks for the links ... looks like some interesting articles, now I just need to find some time to read them !!

Lambkin - thanks for the suggestion of the mayor, I will try that.
I have heard of the book Pembroke People, but I believe this only covers the period up until about 1830ish? My Howell ancestors did not settle in Pembroke Dock until the 1840s.

Thanks again,
Footie

Goodmorning Footie

My grandfather James Howell of Pembroke, who incidentally worked in the Dockyard on the Victoia and Albert (2) in the late 1800's had 10 siblings, one of whom was a Thomas Howell who worked in the Dockyard as well. My father and six of his brothers also worked there until closure in 1924. The family comes from Upper Nash and Pembroke....do you think that there is any link?

There are no pension records available at the Record Office. I'm pretty sure you will only find these at TNA. I will double check on next visit in the hope I'm wrong.

His pension would have been paid by the Government.

The book Pembroke People will be of no assistance as it only goes upto circa 1837.

I can check out his burial entry at Pembroke Dock St John, however since his burial is not recorded at Llanion Cemetery, there must be some doubt as to his residence here at his death.

For a general history just google "Pembroke Dock".

This is a good book: "Pembroke Dock Through Time" by Phil Carradice

There are several historians in PD one lives across the road from me.

This is a mural of P D through the age.
