« on: Tuesday 20 September 05 18:58 BST (UK) »
I can only find one mention of the lose of the South Goodwin Vessel in 1956.That is from the website from which i have printed out a Maritime fact sheet. I have found someone looking for information. The Master was a Horace T.Skipp the persons grandfather who along with all the crew except one was lost. There must be a report on this well known disaster somewhere.Cant find anything about the rescue or the crew. Any ideas where i can look ???

celia,is this what you want.
on 27th nov 1954 gales of exceptional force had been blowing of the east coast of kent, early in the morning it was noticed that the south goodwin light vessel had vanished, lifeboats at dover, ramsgate and walmer were alerted, during the night the dover and ramsgate lifeboats were launched and carried out searches of the goodwin, without success,at daylight the vessel was located on her beam ends, lying on her side where she had drifted, the walmer lifeboat was launched, the combined efforts of all 3 could find no survivors,a call was made to the 66th air rescue squadron USAF,which provided a helicopter from its base at manston, kent near ramsgate,a second sortie by captain parkins at 9pm noticed a solitary figure,a ministry of agriculture and fisheries birdwatcher clinging to the light vessels superstructure, ignoring the normal rules, the helicopter was brought down to 30 feet and in spite of wreckage and spray managed to pluck the man to safety and land him at manston,
capt parkins was the first pilot to be awarded a RNLI medal [silver award] he was awardd it on 13th jan 1955

Hi celia - sorry about that, try this, I can't find a link that takes you straight to the page ???

If you put RNLI South Goodwin 1954 in to google, it's the 5th heading down the list, NEWS Prelude and Fugue, click on that it's page 5.  A report from Royal Institute of Navigation News, on the 50th Anniversary of the tradgedy.  Similar to manmacks post but also makes moving reading.
