Brackenthwaite

Please can any one here who knows "East Ward" tell me if Brackenthwaite is a name of a hamlet or a house ??????

In the census it says address: Brackenthwaite and as town/village/hamlet: Murton

I found a Brackenthwaite but it's in "West Ward" and I'm very positive that Murton is "East Ward" so my thought it was a name of a house or even a road.

It's the same with Bongate, Bankend ...... what are they?

Can't find them on old maps of Westmorland.

Hi Miranda

I tried a search on the 1881 census discs for Brackenthwaite and Westmorland and there appeared to be two families with that address
John Lightburn 57 and William Little 41

The area is Appleby St Michael and the children of the LITTLE household were born at Bongate which is, I think, an area of Appleby.

There is a Brackenthwaite in Cumberland and the only reference I found to Bankend was someones birthplace in Cumberland.

Not sure if that helps :-\

Hi Heather,

In the census of 1901, ancestors of my lived on that address, "Brackenthwaite".
I know it must be near Appleby but I wasn't sure if it was their address or the place they lived. Although it says Murton as place.
In the census of 1881, they lived at "Stoneriggs", Appleby. Almost all of their children were born Bongate. You might be right if Bongate is a part of Appleby.

I was told that Bankend must be somewhere between Appleby and Warcop. I'm still looking for some kind of map and find all these hamlets or addresses on.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Miranda
Try googling for Bongate Applepy map and you'll find it in the pub guide.

Have you seen this map?

Hi Miranda

try this link:

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=372500&y=521500&z=3&sv=murton&st=3&tl=Murton,+Cumbria+[City/Town/Village]&searchp=newsearch.srf&mapp=newmap.srf

should show you the hamlet of Murton and also (top left hand corner) Brackenthwaite - looks to be a farm or smallholding by the size.  If the link doesn't work, go to Streetmap.co.uk and type in Murton in the search field - the second Cumbrian listing is the one you are looking for.

For an 1863 map of the area try http://www.old-maps.co.uk/.  Again use Murton as the search under place name and select the Westmorland one.  You can then zoom right and then up (a few times) and it also shows Brackenthwaite.

Hi Brian,

I thought, they might have been farms but I wasn't 100% sure. Thanks!

Yes, I'm looking into the Richardson Family.  ;)
There seem to have been a few in & around Appleby at that time.

I've a Sarah (mother: Richardson; father: Jackson) who married a Richardson (but then one of a different family).

Hi Miranda,
My great great grandparents were Joseph Jackson and Mary Richardson. They lived at Brackenthwaite which I understand was a farm. Their daughter Sarah A Jackson married a John Richardson and had a large family. Are you descended from Sarah? Perhaps we are related? Linda x
