All

Just had a look on the "useless" (personal opinion) National Burial Index and after 1861 there isn't many in Cumberland, if you find any give me the details and I'll go have a look in the Record Office, up here (across the road almost - well two roads)

If you want me to give you a list of all the burials on the Index, It's no prob

Hi Andrew

I have all the NBI version 2 burials for SCURR/SKURR. I have copied all the deaths from the GRO for SCURR and am on to SKURR at present. I think I know who each belongs to, but if I get stuck and need any info from the burials will give you a shout.

If you come across ANY info on SCURR/SKURR on your travels I would however be grateful.

Hi Lorraine,

My grandfather was William Simmons and his sister was Mahala Simmons who married George SKURR in Battle, East Sussex in 1919.  They then emigrated to NZ and had a son, Maurice.  I'm guessing that you are Maurice's daughter and we're therefore related!

Liz

Hi Andrew
Im just starting out with this so amyone you could refer me too who might know about the Skurr,Scurr name I would appreciate it. I know it originallly comes from Scandanavia.
Hi Blondz - The best authority on Scurrs has already directed you to her website. She and I are connected a few generations back. Sharon is very helpful and she should probably be your first port of call.
My Scurrs are all from the Cumberland, mainly Whitehaven area.
There can be no certainty where the name originated but it is probably Germanic/Scandinavian and possibly from the old German Schurr. There is a French version De Xurre. There is a small village in South Wales called Scurrival. Also if you look on a map of the Western Highlands and Islands you will find many mountain tops with the Prefix of SGURR OR SGOR these are thought to be linked especially as when the name is prounounced (or at least when My Dad was a youngster there) with a G and not a C. Co-incidence maybe but I guess we'll never know for sure.
My late uncle John Scurr was the mayor of Wanganui he had 3 children two of whom, I believe, live in Australia and the other is a schoolteacher in one of the larger cities in NZ (For some reason Auckland is in my head as I type this but not sure)
There is a branch of the Scurr line living on Tasmania - Wendy Scurr but I've not made the connection with them yet.
More Scurrs have been found in the NE of England rather than the NW so there is every chance that is where they first entered the country just when is lost in the mist.
There was a John Skyrr who was the mayor of Faversham in Kent back in the 1500's but again no link found with mine as yet.
Several branches of the family spread to the USA also.
Hope this has been of use.

Hi I’m looking for. John Scurr circa 1770. Living in London. Married and had children. Died early and was working in the royal household as a coal man. His wife got a pension.
However there is nothing to indicate where he was from. Any tips please
