Royal Horse Artillery
« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 11:48 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if there is anyway I can trace details of a Corporal in the Royal Horse Artillery?   It would have been about 1890s, he had died by 1906.   Any suggestions please?

Any surviving Military Record will be at the National Archive Kew.

Have a look in your Library for a copy of Tracing your Ancestors in The PRO by Amanda Bevan, full of usefull information.

Hi Annie - the only information I have is :

William John Cakebread - Corporal Royal Horse Artillary, and he had died by 1906.   This information is from his son's marriage cert.  dated November 1906 when his son was 23 years old, so I presume William was possibly born about 1860.

HI SUEY - thanks for the info., I will try and get hold of the book you suggest.

Many thanks to you both

Oooo Marj - help us out here, if we are to find either William or his son in any census we need a bit more info  :D

ie - What is Williams son's name - where did he marry, what part of the country are we looking? What exactly did the marriage cert say for his fathers occupation, because it's just possible we won't find father if he was still a serving soldier, he might be overseas.

Sorry!  William's son was Frederick Arthur Otto Cakebread who was married on 1 November 1906 at The Register Office, Wandsworth, London, aged 23, a coachman (domestic).

Frederick and his bride Adelaide Noot were living at 26 Weimar Street Putney.

William is given as William John Cakebread (deceased), Corporal (Royal Horse Artillery).  The witnesses to the marriage were both Noots.

I haven't been able to trace either William or Frederick.   This is why I  I thought I would try the Armed Forces.  I thought that I had found William b. at St. Luke London in 1861/1 and am waiting for birth cert. ordered - however, I now think that that William was William Isaac - unless of course he was William John Isaac!

Incidentally, I went into the library today and ordered the book you recommended!
