Watson, New Deer
« on: Tuesday 04 October 05 17:54 BST (UK) »
Watson - Shevado, New Deer  around 1881 as shown on Census
Specifically looking for details of a James Watson who married (or not) a Helen Gordon. I know they had at least 8 children who were noted as born in the Tarves area.  I have no birth, marriage or death details and cannot find them on SP.
Can anyone help please...

Hi Kaye

The 1881 Census you mention:

Dwelling:   Burnside Census Place:Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland
Source:   FHL Film 0203466     GRO Ref    Volume 243    EnumDist 1    Page 2
Head: James WATSON age 76 born Bourty, Aberdeen; Occ:Farmer Of 50 Ac Empy 1 Man 1 Girl & 1 Boy
Wife: Hellen GORDON age 63    born Tarves, Aberdeen
Son: Charles WATSON age 21 born Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland
Son: William WATSON age 15    born Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland; Farm Serv
Granddau: Mary  age 1 m born Tarves, Aberdeen (no surname enumerated)
Dau: Mary WATSON   unmarr, age 19 born Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland

AS far as I can work out, James' birth palce about 1805 of Bourty is maybe part of Inverurie Aberdeen.

James died 1883 and left a will, according to Scotland's People:
Name: Watson James
Reg date:18/02/1884
Description:retired Farmer, Burnside of Schivas, Parish of Tarves,
DOD: d. 16/10/1883 at Burnside of Schivas, testate
Will:  Aberdeen Sheriff Court Wills SC1/37/93

According to IGI, James WATSON & Helen GORDON had 12 children between 1838 and 1863.
1   JAMES WATSON b  05 OCT 1838 Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland
2   GEORGE WATSON b 06 MAR 1841 Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland
3   WILLIAM WATSON b 17 APR 1843 Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland
4   PETER GORDON WATSON b NOV 1847 & chr 17 DEC 1847 Tarves, Aberdeen
5   HELEN WATSON -17 MAY 1845  & Chr 26 MAY 1845 Tarves, Aberdeen,
6   AGNES WATSON b 01 JUN 1850 & chr 12 JUN 1850 Tarves, Aberdeen,
7   MARGARET WATSON b 03 JUL 1852 & chr 23 JUL 1852 Tarves, Aberdeen,
8   JOHN WATSON b 11 OCT 1854 & Chr 31 OCT 1854 Tarves, Aberdeen,
9   ALEXANDER WATSON b 25 FEB 1857 Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland
10 CHARLES WATSON b 20 AUG 1859 Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland
11 MARY WATSON b  22 NOV 1861 Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland
12 DUNCAN WATSON b 24 NOV 1863 Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland

I was hoping one of them was born 1855, but just dipped out there  :(

According to Census 1818, Helen was born around 1818.
There is an IGI birth:
HELEN GORDON  Birth:  29 JUL 1818  & Christening:  29 JUL 1818   Tarves, Aberdeen, Scotland
Father:  GEO. GORDON  Family  and Mother:  MARY LAMB

You can pay to view download the will on Scotlands People, it may provide some information - and view download James' death to  give you his parents.

Hope this helps
Cheers

Re place of birth for James this is almost certainly Bourtrie (Bourty) which borders Tarves. see the weblink for some historical info etc.

I am the GG grand daughter of Margaret Watson who married James Murrison on 13 September 1849 in Peterhead.  Margaret is really giving me the round around as I just can't seem to locate her or her parents, you havent come across her by any chance whilst carrying out your research?.  The words "Big Brick Wall" comes to mind.  :(
