British Army in North West Frontier
« on: Tuesday 17 August 04 21:18 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know which regiments of the British Army were in the North West Frontier region of India in 1897-1900?

I am trying to find out which regiment my great grandfather's brother was in and the only information I have is that he died in that area in 1897.  If I can find out which regiments were there, maybe I can search their records in the PRO as it's the only hope I have of finding him.

Hi Amy

His name was John Thomas Buckett and he was stationed at at place called Karappa on the North West Frontier.  He was 25 (was my grandfather's brother not g.grandfather's - my mistake).

He was listed as 25 when he died - was born around 1st October 1873 in Rochester, Kent.

Thanks in advance.

Some possible candidates are

1st Battalion Royal West Surrey Regiment

2nd Battalion Derbyshire Regiment

They were in the area at the Karappa at the time.

Dear Amy

Thanks for that quick reply.  I can now start to make some enquiries at Kew - you have been a great help.  Will let you know if I get any results.

Regards
