DEVOILS of Widford village
« on: Thursday 06 October 05 19:37 BST (UK) »
Would appreciate a look-up in the 1841 or 1851 census for Robert Devoil, his wife Eliza and family. Robert was a mealman and shopkeeper in Widford.
Thank you. :)

Peter, Thank You so much for the information, to have both is an unexpected bonus :)

I knew Eliza was a Stacey before her marriage, but not that her father was a farmer.  It seems each generation farmed as well as running the village shop.

Hi Nessie,

I have closely scrutinised the spelling of James the Farmer's surname and compared with other families in the village, feel it should be STRACEY.

I would mention  that I have found three other families of Devoils in the two census returns for Widford one of which, Joseph and Elizabeth aged 64 in 1851,  might be Roberts parents.    If you would like details, this can be arranged.

Peter, I have Stracey down as the surname, but know how odd letters are missed out or added when the census was written.
I am interested, very much so, in Joseph and Elizabeth as they were Roberts parents. I have a note that Joseph lived at, I think it is Barford Hill Farm near Widford. I don't know Elizabeths maiden name, but Joseph is said to have brothers, Richard, George and Alfred.
Thank You for taking the time to help me with this family, they have been difficult in some ways as their name has various spellings.

Peter, thanks don't seem to be enough for all the help you have given me with the Devoil family. I now know where they came from before they lived in Widford and intend to check if possible when they arrived in Essex from France if that is possible.

It has been very interesting finding the farming connection goes back so many generations and decendants of Joseph have farmed in various counties in England and Canada.

Your help has been much appreciated .

Hi Nessie,

I've found two Devoil marriages which may interest you, Charles married Rachel Blakes  09 Sep 1836  and George married Elizabeth Burton 10 Sep 1831, both at Widford.

I've extracted details of Straceys in the 1841/51 census and will send you details by PM.
