Sorry, thought you said you left in 1966.

Same here, although I only did 9 years, but loved every second of it, biggest mistake in life was ever leaving the RAF, I even  enjoyed Bridgnorth, although I had been in the Army Cadets for 5 years before I enlisted so I was used to being shouted at.

I live about 3 miles from Halfpenny Green airport now. Our R&I camp was at Sleap Aerodrome, near Shrewsbury. A fellow Scot called Charlie Carruthers played the bagpipes, so he had to walk up and down the lines of tents playing reveille. He should have been paid danger money for the number of boots that were thrown at him.

He ended up as one of my room mates for my last few months in Aden. He came out three weeks after me and 12 months down the line he was still as white as the day he arrived. Never did anything or went anywhere, just went to work and came back and lay on his bed, so we dragged him everywhere with us and when I left he was a lot happier young lad and had a good tan as well.

My Anderson line is from Glasgow from what little we know of it at the moment, but my father was from Wick, Caithness. He was one of 14 children so who knows where they all ended up. Havent heard of any from the Orkney Isles though.

Take care,

Jimbo

Hi Greyhound - It's several months since you asked for background to the Camp so don't know whether you've completed your research.  I was stationed there between 1955 and 1956.  Have a few pics but only of the people.  It was my first posting after training and I travelled to the camp with another airman who lived in the lane outside the camp.  On my first evening I was introduced to the rest of his family.  His uncle I think was a wrestler called Dominic Pye.      The Transport cafe just outside the camp was so popular that it was placed 'Out of Bounds' by the Commanding Officer because everyone was going there for their breakfast instead of the Mess.   I returned to St. Helens about 8 years ago for a look round.  But got completely confused with the geography and couldn't find anything. Regards RAFlad

Hi Raflad,
thanks for the info, regarding my research its still ongoing but very slow ( hitting the wall all the time) finding out anything regarding RAF Haydock seems to be hard work.
I am researching/gathering any info about Haydock itself, so any photos at all will be of help.

Anyway back to RAF Haydock, the lane outside the camp was called Haydock lane and as you know the camp itself was split in half by this road. the camp has now been completely demolished apart from one small area were the officers used to live, this is named Avery Close. The whole of the camp has been built on ( new houses etc).

I would appreciate anything at all which come to mind regarding  RAF Haydock as already mentioned its hard going.

Regards
Steve.
