Meaning of RSO after an address?
« on: Tuesday 11 October 05 04:26 BST (UK) »
I have a death certificate with an address in Carmarthenshire with the acronym RSO after it. I've seen this before but can't recall what it means. Can someone help?

Thanks,
Jeff

I think its likely to be RSD meaning Rural Sanitary District.

RSO, a shortlived postal abbreviation.

Hi there,

I think you will find there are two such abbreviations----RSD and USD.

I believe they stand for Rural Sub-District and Urban Sub-District.

However, I wait to be corrected.

My son's address in a country area, here in Sth Aus is RSD,which I was told meant roadside delivery, postbox and house in such areas can be a fair way up a not too good track, especially in winter!

There is an excellent definition of "Rural Sanitary District" here:

http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/types/status_page.jsp?unit_status=RSD

It's rather interesting to see how the whole thing grew out of the need for a public health act.

I guess a similar method of addressing here in North America (although it has nothing to do with public health) is a Rural Road seen as RR in an address. Similar to the roadside delivery in Australia Goggy mentioned.

Here in N.Z. letters addressed with RD at the end mean they are for RURAL DELIVERY - somewhat similar to others mentioned

On Genuki's pages they list many Trade Directories.
A lot of the adressess have RSO after them.
eg, Kelly's Directory 0f South Wales - 1895
at
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CGN/LlanfihangelGenau'r-Glyn/Kellys1895Tal.html
has this extract
"Thomas David Hughes, postmaster. (Railway Sub-Office. Letters should have R.S.O. Cardiganshire added)."
