Variation on a theme..Gardners of Dover/Folkestone
« on: Sunday 16 October 05 12:06 BST (UK) »
Hello folks...well, the elusive Gardner family.....again.  I'll give info first and then the plea for help..

Wm. GARDNER marr. Frances MARSH on 5 Apr 1812 Folkestone Kent (IGI)

IGI also lists 5 children born to them:-
Ann...dob 2 Jan 1816
William...dob1 Jan 1821
Sarah...dob 11 Jul 1824
Alice...dob 30 Apr 1812
Rebecca...dob 2 Apr 1837......all of the children were christened at St. Mary the Virgin, Dover.

This is where sheer unadulterated ignorance comes in, on my behalf of course.  Are there any records that could be checked to expand on the scant knowledge I have on any member of the little family William and Frances had?  I realise that location of the individuals would assist, but at the moment this is all I have to go on.

I would be most grateful for any help and would be more than willing to pay for any expenses incurred.

Once again, many thanks.

Rog ;D ;D

Hi Rog

Are you sure that this William GARDINER is the same as the one in your other post (married to Charlotte)?

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93062.0.html

It's just that the 1861/1871/1881 census say your William (married to Charlotte) was born c1827 ie. 6 years later than this one on the IGI ???

I will check the St Mary's registers tomorrow - if the dates you've got are correct, she hardly got home from the church before giving birth!

Ann was born on 12 Jan 1816, but was not baptised until 2 Apr 1837!
William was born 1 May 1820, bapt 1 Jan 1821
Sarah was born 12 May 1822, bapt 11 Jul 1824
Alice was born abt April 1823, bur 15 Feb 1824, a. 10 months, but appears not to have been baptised
Rebecca was born 22 Nov 1836, bapt same day as Ann - 2 Apr 1837

Although the registers give Rebecca as daughter of William and Frances, I would not be surprised if she was actually the daughter of Ann or Sarah, brought up by them to avoid any scandal - not an unusual occurrence.  The previous 4 children were over a 7 year period, then a 131/2 year gap??

Will check out the census next visit.

Hi all hope you do not mind me butting in but found this 1841 census.

HO107/484/12 page 10 & 11 South Pier

Francis Gardner 45 Milliner Y
Sarah do 11 N
Rebecca do 10 N
Emma Wilbur 15 F.S Y
Sarah Wigmore 50 Nurse E?

The ages do not fit with the ones you gave so might be the wrong family?

Also found this I thought it might be William the son but again the ages differs

HO107494/8 Snargate St. Page 16

William Gardner 25 Plumber Y
Jane do 25 Y
Alfred 9 months Y
Ann Denne 15 F.S.

Both families were in St. Mary the Virgin.

Sorry if I have confused you more

Regards
Sue

p.s. Big William was not there
researching Bateup & Butchers from Mountfield, Sussex & Horsemonden, Kent.
