Completed Looking for Henry Prosser Evans bc 1876
« on: Sunday 16 October 05 17:12 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help.

All I have is a marriage certificate which states that Henry Prosser Evans married Margaret Alice Taylor on 11.10.1905 in the Registry Office Pembroke.

He states his age as 29, and was a corporal in the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, based at Pembroke Dock.  His fathers name was John (deceased).

I have managed to trace Margarets family, but don't have a clue as to the birth place of Henry.

I have been unable to find him on any census that I have been able to access.

I'm new to this so if anyone has an idea on how to proceed it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Sheila

The name Prosser caught my attention because my Harries family from Solva have a link to some Prossers by marriage. So I had a look in the 1881 census for any Prossers around that age and found one that seemed like a a shot in the dark at first, but...

RG11  5418 / 41, pg 3
Haverfordwest St Thomas, Pembroke, Wales
Merlins Hill

John PROSSER   Head   M   Male   33   Haverfordwest   Commercial Traveller
Hannah M. PROSSER   Wife   M   Female   28   Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales
William H. PROSSER   Son   U   Male   2   Haverfordwest
Mary E. PROSSER   Daut   U   Female   7 m   Haverfordwest
Ellen REID   Servant   U   Female   14   Haverfordwest   Domestic

I know the age is off by 3 years and the name isn't exact (don't know what "H" stands for). But the fathers name is John and if you check the IGI database (www.familysearch.org) you'll find a John Prosser of Haverfordwest death in 1897.

A search at Free BMD gives us some more proof that I think you'll like. If you look for the marriage of this John Prosser to Hannah in Haverfordwest you find their marriage in 1877. And guess what: Hannah's full name is Hannah Maria EVANS.

I suggest posting an 1891 census look-up request on the RootsChat census look-up board for this family and see what you get. Looks like the family stayed in Haverfordwest until 1897. Or at least, the father did.

Happy Hunting!

Hi Jeff,

I'm a bit confused ...

Sheila is looking for a Henry Prosser EVANS and you seem to have found a possible Henry Evans PROSSER  ??

You've been most ingenious but I think it is not going to be the one she is after?

Cheers,

Ros

If an exhaustive search for "Henry Prosser Evans" turns up nothing, it may be time to think out of the box a little. But Ros has a good point - it's probably too early to consider someone like the "William H Prosser" I found. Evans is a very common name, as are John, Henry... and William. It may take a while to find him. You may have to look into info relating to his military career to learn more.

I tried in 1901:

I think this is your guy:

Henry Evans  26 Multry Glamorganshire Cornwall Falmouth Soldier Corporal N G Artillery

Multry could be Merthyr Tydfil - it was often abbreviated ( not to Multry though !!)..however there was one Henry Evans b each Q of 1875 in M T, so its still tricky - the 1881 Census has about 6 Henrys to choose from.

His 1901 Census record will probably only show him in barracks !

just in case not:

Henry Evans  23 Middlesex Clerkenwell London   Soldier

Henry Evans  24 Denbigh Wales Berkshire   Private Grenadier Guards

Good luck

Jocelyn

Thankyou to everyone for their input.

You have given me a lot to think about and more avenues to look at.

Many thanks

Hi Sheila,

I know this is a difficult search for you but I thought you might like to try another means of finding your man..via his regiment.

Hi Sheila,
Have just found RootsChat!  My name is Bryan Evans. I note that you were looking for Henry Prosser Evans. HP is my grandfather. Surprisingly, not a lot of obvious information is actually available. Problem is that as far as I know, apart from an inscription on his gravestone, and my father's baptism and wedding certificates , he was never referred to as Henry Prosser...and there are many, many Henry Evans's of the right vintage. Please contact for more info.
Best wishes, Bryan
