Lost: Annie Thornhill of Woolwich, Kent (c. 1861)
« on: Monday 17 October 05 16:17 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm looking for some help in finding a record of Annie Thornhill in 1861 or 1871.

She married Stephen Eve in Barking, Essex in Feb of 1882, she was noted as age 21.   Her father's name was John Thornhill (and was listed as Soldier).

In 1881 she was living in the Romford Union Workhouse, unmarried age 21, born Woolwich, Kent.

In 1891 the census states her age as 28, and place of birth as N. Woolwich (which would make her birth 1863).

She passed away sometime before 1899, when her husband re-married an Ann Carter.

If she truly was 21 in 1881/82 she should be in the 1861 census.  I can neither find her in the 1861 or in the 1871 census.  The birth records of that time that I've found for an "Annie Thornhill" do not match the place of birth either.

I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks,

Tina :)

Which Charlton was this one?

Dec qtr 1862 - only a Martha Ann Thornhill - Ashton or a Sarah Ann Thornhill - Charlton

Pauline

Can you confirm that you have used bmdindex or 1837 online/ fiche rather than Freebmd and you have also included Female Thornhill births?

Hi Pauline,

I used 1837 online.  There were no "female" Thornhill births that I remember seeing on these pages.

Martha Ann Thornhill - Ashton - 8d 370
Sarah Ann Thornhill - Ch"o"rlton - 8c 520

Thanks again for your help.

Still no good match though...

Reviewing the backgound.

North Noolwich is going to show as an essex birthplace more often than not.

A lot of 1861 Woolwich census was lost in storage..

This is going to start getting expensive.

If we make the assumption that annie may be an orphan.

are there any death records for John Thornhill around kent/essex 1861-1881?

Are there any thorn*ill born kent/essex (or living kent/essex) in the 1861/ 1871 census?

Pauline

Hi Pauline,

Thank you for the suggestions.

I know her father John was a Soldier, but I don't know his age or where he was born.  I'll have a look for the death records.

I didn't realize that some of the Woolwich census was lost in storage, so maybe that's "where she is"....

Thanks again for all of your wonderful help.

Tina
