8th Kings Regiment c 1864
« on: Friday 21 October 05 10:43 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have today received the birth certificate for my great uncle William Wright Poole February 1864, born in Sheffield.

On it it states that his father was a Private in the Kings Regiment.

Does anyone know if this was a Sheffield/Yorkshire Regiment or indeed, where it was based.

I am trying  to find the father, Charles Poole, my great grandfather, and am not having any luck with census searches or bmd's for Sheffield. I wondered if he hailed from some other part of the country.

Any help to find his birthplace or HQ of Regiment would be appreciated.

Calmar

Thank you for your replies, Doreen and Llwyd.

I had looked on that site but just wondered whether they recruited in Sheffield or were stationed there.

http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/008-1.htm - the 1st Bn was stationed in Sheffield in 1863, moving onto Manchester and Liverpool.

Have you managed to find this family in 1871?

Hi Jorose,

I can only find Ann Poole and her 2 children in 1871. They are living with her parents, George and Ann Wright, in Sheffield. No sign of Charles. He was still alive in 1869 and was a Brass Castor then when his daughter was born.

Thanks for the info on Regiment, it narrows his time in Sheffield down for me as I am looking for his marriage.

Regards,

Calmar :)
