I have recently obtained a couple of early Post Cards of Patterdale, by "Lowe, Patterdale" which has raised my interest in trying to find out more about him. Is anyone aware of the above, or his decendants & more particularly where his photographic archives may be? In "Kellys" 1929 edition, there is a Joseph Lowe, photographer, of Yew Tree Cottage, Deepdale mentioned but he is not listed in the 1938 edition. Roger Hadwin |

Hello Rodger, Joe Lowe was my great uncle he married my grandmothers sister Jessie Grisdale, they lived at Yew Tree cottage Deepdale Bridge until his death in 1934 he is buried in P atterdale churchyard. He was also a very good landscape painter but for some reason he never signed his work. I have found many of his postcards in antique shops. Idon,t know of any photograph archives of his work I do remember his camera,s they were very large and used glass plates I dont know how he ever carried them up onto the fells where he took many of his photographs. It is so nice to hear from somone interested in his work. Best wishes, Dorothy. |

As I understand the present copyright law, Joe LOWE's photo's are copyright until the 70th anniversary of his death [in 2004]. Dorothy, did you inherit his estate or, if not, do you know who currently owns the copyright? |

Hello Jake, uncleJoe,s estate would be inherited by
his wife, then after her death her son who has since died would inherit. There is
a grandson David Lowe but we have lost touch with him, he lives down
south.so I do not know who owns the copyright.

Hello Jake,
Just i case you did not receive my first reply
about the copyright of Joe Lowes postcards which I think I may have sent back to
myself.
His wife would inherit his estate then after her
death it would pass to their son who has since died there is a grandson
David Lowe who lives down south but we have lost touch,so I don,t know who owns
the copyright but it will not be long before it runs out.

Further to 'Jake's' email, Joseph died on 2 Feb 1934 according to his gravestone (as included on the gravestones page in Patterdale Patter!)

Hello Dorothy,
I read your messages on the Board and while this message is unrelated to the subject, I hoped I could ask you about your JESSIE GRIS(e)DALE.
My maiden name was Grisedale and my grandfather and ancestors were all born in Penrith, Cumberland. Is there any chance there could be a link between "your Jessie Grisedale" and mine.
Grandfather Thomas Grisdale born Penrith 1862 to William b. 1833 occ: Joiner and Mary Ann (nee Robson) their other children:
John Robson Grisdale b. 1853 Joiner/Carpenter later lived in Workington William b. 1856 occ: Joiner/Builder Margaret Ann b. 1859 Thomas b. 1862 Geroge b. 1864 Levi b. 1867 Charles b. 1872 Mary Alice b. 1874
All baptized in Christ Church, Penrith.
Would love to hear from you if you think there is a link between the Gris(e)dale families. Sincerely, Rene/USA

Since first indicating my interest in Joe Lowe at the time I obtained a couple of postcards, in my message of 1 August 2003, I have added to my collection now having about 50 as a result of which, I am keen to learn more about him and the photos he took. This leads me to the suggestion that I would be interested in receiving any information members may have relating to Joe Lowe and of course collating this. With Jake's permission this could in due course possibly feature as a section in Patterdale Patter. I envisage as part of this, a numerical inventory of the photos he took which would assist collectors but as the numbering goes well into 4400+ (according to the cards in my possession) & there are some without numbers there must be many cards available accepting of course that his numbering sequence may not have been 'one after the other' & there may have been gaps. As previously mentioned I would of course be happy to be the focal point to gather the information together. I look forward to member's reaction to my suggestion Roger Hadwin |
