The only suitable James I found in 1861 and 1851 born anything like Garmside etc was James with mother Susannah/Susan
1861 Cramlington RG9/3851 fol.91 p.39
1851 Urpeth HO107/2394 fol.318 p.47

but I think I need 1871 first!

Well at least we agree on Mary Jane Watson, but we could
both be wrong?  Huh

To all following this tangle.

I've phoned Stockton Register Office, the lady there gets a huge thankyou for her kind efforts (she did say she was having a quiet day so had time to look):

Have ordered the birth cert for George Robert Thompson b.1865 Stockton, mother Mary Jane Watson, father Michael Thompson, she looked through all the registrations for him, and there are no other Georges with those parents (or father James).  She also looked through all the marriages for Mary J Watson in the area from 1850 onwards and none to any Thompson.  She told me that the other births I wanted to try for (for William - Sedgefield and Annie - Shildon) will be at Bishop Auckland, so that will have to wait until tomorrow.

So will wait for George's birth cert to find Michael's occupation and address.  Then to look for another marriage somewhere.... could even have been Yorkshire as Mary J was born Middleton Tyas.

Too much wine at lunch probably (me not you)   Embarrassed

I only found one other marriage on freebmd in Stockton, that was for a Mark Thompson/Mary Jane Watson

The marriage cert 1864 which I have for Michael Thompson/Mary Watson (not Mary Jane) shows them both living at Sedgefield, she at Sedgefield Rectory, her father George a coachman - which doesn't fit with the Mary Jane I found in Barmpton with father George gardener, and Michael was a platelayer, father Michael the same, which fits with the Michael senior/Elizabeth family we found - so I think it is for that Michael.  I asked the registrar to check Stockton marriages as sometimes they're not on freebmd, and she found none matching in Stockton - I thought James/Michael & Mary Jane might have married there as George was born there.

So I need to find a marriage for Mary Jane and Michael/James Thompson, and I can't see anything else at the moment.  Does that make sense ?

That's what I meant too - I couldn't find a marriage anywhere at all for a couple with those names.  Smiley

I've just found a baptism on IGI Sedgefield for William Thompson 1 Dec 1872, parents Michael Thompson & Mary  (groan)

I'm beginning to think I have the right marriage cert, he's been Michael all along, and just became a coal miner after he got married to Mary who didn't bother putting the Jane on her marriage cert.  Someone gave the wrong forename for him in 1901 census and on Mary Elizabeth's birth cert (maybe?)

Still can't find any of them 1871 - maybe another glass will help!

Thanks Vivien, very kind of you, hope I get George's birth cert by Saturday, the lady at Stockton was so nice I forgot to ask for Michael's occupation and address which I'm sure she would have told me!  May know more then.

Have now received George's birth cert, but am no further forward, sadly  Sad

George Robert Thompson born 2 Nov 1865 at Blakeston Cottage, Norton, Stockton  - father Michael Thompson, occupation Farmer's Hind, mother Mary Jane formerly Watson  -  so  another occupation for Michael!

Have trawled Norton 1871 census but not there.  Next known child William was born Sedgefield 1872

Think I may have to send for a couple of death certs to see if I can sort out the Michael/James Thompson enigma

Any more ideas, anyone?

What a shame Barbara .. at least Michael seems to be coming out on top in the name charts .. without me having to check .. how many times have you found Michael called James as opposed to Michael?

Does that make sense?  Cheesy

Nice avatar!

James was named as father on Mary Eliz's birth cert May 1881, and on 1901 census.  He was Michael on George's birth cert 1865, Ralph's birth cert 1878, 1881 and 1891 census.  I would have suspected a second marriage if he hadn't changed backwards & forwards after Mary E's birth

I have 3 death certs to choose from:
Sep 1906 Thompson James   age 68 Auckland 10a 139
Sep 1911 Thompson James   age 70 Auckland 10a 246
Sep 1914 Thompson Michael J   age 71 Auckland 10a 217

Just thought I might state the obvious here but I think you have the right Mary J Watson as both brother and son are Ralph, not that common a name... Huh

Going on his birth year being 39/40 I would go for the middle of your three options there Barbara  Grin

Thank you, have sent for the last two, (was thinking the last one might be Michael James).  I would have checked names first with Bishop Auckland register office but it's not the same system there as at Stockton, so I've also sent for what I think will be Mary Jane's death cert.

It's so nice to know there are kind people out there trying to help, thank you all, it's a bit of a tangle but am determined to try to sort it soon.

Thanks again!
