He's listed as not born in county because he wasn't born in Northumberland, so could be from anywhere in England (or Wales).  There are 2 columns for Where Born - one is whether or not born in the census county and the other which states if they were from Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts.

Well that's news to me. I'll have to start looking elsewhere then. I do know of a Ralph Heddon born at Newburn in Northumberland in 1807 but I don't think it's him. Any advice on how I can track him down? Undecided

That only applies to 1841 census, after that you usually get the full birthplace.

Also linking this to your other thread about the marriage to save any more duplication as I see Carole has also done the census look-ups there
