Could anyone help me with a lookup for the birth/christening of my 5xGreat-Grandmother, Mary PEAT/PEET, please?
I would love to find her family and be able to go back further.
Mary was born Lesmahagow abt 1758c
She was married to fellow by the name of WEIR before she was transported to Australia from England.
She 'may' also had a brother James or John who was a Reverend.
Any assistance would be most welcomed!
Thank you,
Christine Australia

PS What 'evidence' do you have that she was born in Lesmahagow?
Post everything you know and details of your sources.

Happy to, but Why? If Mary 'Peat' was born c1758, her married name Weir would not be mentioned. Am I missing something?

I am following every possibilty...
May be she was a WEIR/WARE who married a PEET/PEAT/PATE/PETE???
This information was taken from the Sydney Morning Herald Newspaper Reel, BMD 1831-1853: Death memorial.
"LARCOM" Mrs Had been in the Colony 40 years died 9 Mar 1841 Mother of the late Colonel Peat and Rev'd James Peat of Inner Leithan, Scotland"
The above is about my 5xGreat-Grandmother, Mary. Maybe - PEAT was her married name?
Cheers,
Christine

My goodness though - another spelling of the last name..."PAIT"
Thank you David.

As I said already, I can't follow your logic. Well, I can, but don't jump to the wrong conclusions. Make sure you back up the evidence - sorry if I'm preaching to the converted!
Good luck CHRISTINE Hope we speak again

Christine, as you know, I've also sent you this by email but thought it best to post it here too in case other people read the thread - it'll avoid duplication of effort.
Other siblings in the William Weir / Marion PAIT family that I can find are: James 11/12/1757 to William Weir and Marion PATE (Could this be the brother that was the Reverend???) Margret Weir 22/7/1760 “ “ May Weir 17/5/1764 “ “
All Lesmahagow
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ve also found the marriage of William Weir and Marion PATE on 25/7/1753
Obviously, this is only of any use to you if you can establish it’s the family you are looking for. I’m concerned about that because you originally asked about Mary Peat (Peet) who married a Weir, whereas all the above relates to Mary Weir.
I’ve searched for marriages of Mary Weir in Lesmahagow and there is only one where the date would tie in, unless she got married very late in life. That would be the marriage to Robert Porteous in 1779.
A marriage to Thomas Johnstone in 1770 is less likely but if Mary was Christened in 1756 when she was a few years old, it is still a possible.
There is also the possibility that she was married outside Lesmahagow. OR, she never married at all and had children outside of wedlock – that might explain why you thought her married name was Weir? – I’m guessing.
Anyway, I hope some of this is of use to you Christine. Certainly food for thought!

Thanks Dave for all your assistance.
I certainly do have a lot to mull over.
On Mary's Headstone described her as:
"Mrs Mary Larkham, aged 87, a native of Lesmarago[sic], Scotland."
[She was nearer to 83 given her age stated in 1828 and that she bore a child in 1799]
Regards,
Christine
