1891 missing persons
« on: Sunday 02 March 08 05:01 GMT (UK) »

I have been searching through the 1891 census for Bristol and have been unable to find several people - my grandmother included.  I have searched on the first name only and the surname only but no luck.  I have the people in 1881 and again in 1901 but not in 1891.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Unfortunately yes!  Sad
I have several cases of missing ancestors. Most of the times missing people are mistranscribed but sometimes they are just missing for whatever reason.

Have you already posted their details on here?  Smiley

Hi Alf

The ones of most importance are

Maud Mary Taylor born March quarter 1871 Bristol.  I have her in 1881 and 1901 and in 1893 she married Tom Savery a widower.  I have him in 1891.  I have searched every Maud, Mary, and Taylor born in Bristol in 1871 +2 years with no luck.

The other one is Henry James Herman born Bristol March Quarter 1873 and who married Minnie Blackmore September Quarter 1899.  I can't find him in 1881, 1891 or 1901.  I have tried Henry, James, and also looked at variations of Herman.  The only records that show up on ancestry are his birth, marriage and death (in Pontypridd in 1907)  I have looked at the censuses for Wales.  I do have his wife in 1901 with their 9 month old son, staying with her brother in Bristol.  I thought he might have had a job that took him away from home, but surely he would have been with his parents in 1881 when he was only about 8 years old.

There was a possible James Herman born c 1875 in Sedy but it's not him.

Thanks for the message

This one could be a possibility for Henry Herman in 1891

Henry Surman, 18 (1873)
Born- Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
Living- St Martin, Birmingham, Warwickshire
Occupation is I think Market porter
He is a boarder with lots of other boarders.
The original does look like Surman but it could be that whoever gave the information on that houshold got his name wrong.

Sorry forget that one, found the Surman family in 1881
Joseph Surman 32
Ellen Surman 35
Anne Surman 12
Mary Surman 10
Henry Surman 8
Jane Surman 3
Ellen Surman 1

Hi

Thank you for the Henry Surman but I don't think it is him.  I tried to find him in 1901 in both England and Wales but couldn't.

This one is a total mystery - missing from all three censuses.

Thanks again

Hi

Mr Herman or what ever name the census can give him. Do you have any info from the 1871 census about his family

Hi Alf

Sorry for the delay in replying - I didn't receive a notification of your message.  The problem is I don 't have the names of his parents or siblings.  I have looked at Hermans in Bristol in the 1871 census and then tried to track them through in the 1881 census but no luck so far.  Some are obviously not the family and others just seem to disappear!

Hello   Cheesy Cheesy

I had the similar thing with my G grandfather, he was missing from 1891 and 1901.  Cut a long story short, I found him on the 1891 census in Wales, (completely different to where he should be!), at Pembrokeshire army barracks.  It turns out he was due to sail shortly to Ireland then to the Boer War.  Lucky I caught him!.  Then in 1901 he is still in South Africa serving with army.  Is this a possibility for your man?

Hi Trippy

Thanks for that - it's another avenue to follow up.
