EXPLORE ABERDEEN

Welcome to Aberdeen City Archives

Stained Glass Coat of Arms

Aberdeen City Archives exists to collect and preserve historical records relating to the City of Aberdeen and its locality and to secure significant modern records for future generation.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - INDUSTRIAL ACTION ON WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST 2008

Following a national ballot the public services union Unison have advised that there is to be a day of industrial action on Wednesday 20 August 2008.  As a result, the Town House office of Aberdeen City Archives will be closed on that day and the Old Aberdeen House office will be running a limited service.  Visitors will not be admitted to the Old Aberdeen House branch without a prior appointment.

New!

We have recently added guides and lists to various collections available for viewing online.  We hope to have more appearing each month, so keep checking our Catalogues page for updates!

Aberdeen City Archives have launched a new Document of the Month feature.  This will showcase a document from a different collection each month and aims to give people the opportunity to not only see what different archives are like, but also introduce a wider variety of items to our visitors.

Aberdeen City Archives

Acting within the Resources Management Service, the unit provides an important service to members and officials while maintaining a strong public profile through its searchroom services and outreach activities.

The unit also provides a professional archives service for Aberdeenshire Council.

Staff ensure that the records are housed in secure accommodation under suitable environmental conditions on two sites - the Town House and Old Aberdeen House.

Fragile material is protected and stored appropriately and conservation of documents is undertaken by specialists when required.

The records are sorted and catalogued by staff and made available to the public in the City Archives' searchrooms. At present, collection level descriptions of some of our records are available on the website of the Scottish Archive Network.

Aberdeen City Archives offers a full range of modern reader services at its two public search rooms. Access to most of the records held in the City Archives is free to the public, however, users of certain classes of records for commercial purposes will be subject to charges.  Details of our charges are available via our Table of Fees or on request.
