My grandmother Catherine McVeety travelled to USA around 1893, when she was aged 16. Family history has it that she went on a sailing ship. Her parents had both died and she went to live with an uncle? in Pensylvannia but she didn't like it and had returned to Manchester by 1899. I would like to find more info about her voyage, would it have been a sailing ship or a steam ship? Did she sail from Liverpool ? etc. It seems a very brave thing for a young girl to have done on her own. Any clues or help much appreciated.

Have you tried to find her parent's name? And her birth? She would have been between Census's in both countries.
Here is a possibility from the Civil Reg that may be helpful to order.
Name: MCVEETY, Catherine Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1877 District: Manchester (1837-1924) County: Lancashire Volume: 8d Page: 196

Thanks I do have her birth and marr cert and also her parents birth and marr certs so I know the basic details but I am trying to "flesh it out". I believe Catherine's grandfather George McVeety came from Ireland, and have reeched a brick wall with that. Linda

Have you tried the www.ellisisland.org website? It's only good for arrivals at NY but if you are lucky you might find her listed there... in which case you would get a stack of fascinating information on how she voyaged.

Hi Linda, Apparently there are records of ships returning to UK from the US. (PRO references BT26 & BT27). Unfortunately however, they are not available online and no indexes exist. More details can be found on this site
http://www.passengerlists.co.uk/
Please note that, although this site does offer to search on your behalf, I myself have never used them and have no idea of the cost. It does appear though that the author of the site, Debbie Beavis comes across as quite respectable, having written books on the subject of immigration. One available for sale at Amazon.co.uk.
regards Jamie

Thank you so much I'm sure this must be correct. She was born Sept 1877 and she went to USA after her parents died and all the family worked in cotton mills so the occupation would fit. My dad was thrilled to hear a little more about his mother. Thanks again Linda
