Your County - Putting Kent First

Kent 4 star Council

Centre for Kentish Studies

The Centre for Kentish Studies is the Headquarters for the Kent Archives Centre for Kentish Studies searchroomservice. It holds manuscript and printed records for the County of Kent.

The Centre for Kentish Studies will be closed for staff training on Friday 31st October 9am-1pm - apologies for any inconvenience which this may cause.

Our manuscript records are gathered from many sources such as the County Council itself, other local authorities, churches, schools, hospitals, courts and also clubs and societies, local businesses, families and individuals.

Our printed ephemera and books collection covers the whole of the historic County of Kent. It includes books, pamphlets, maps, illustrations and microfilm, some newly published, some rare or out of print, but all reflecting Kent's local history.

We also collect video, oral reminiscences and film made in and about Kent which will help create an impressive 20th Century history of the region.

We aim to make Kent's documentary heritage as widely available as possible and can give help or advice to all those using our service. We can also provide specialist educational material for lessons and project work to teachers and history students through our Education Resources service.

Please check our opening hours prior to any visit. We also advise visitors to book a seat in advance to avoid disappointment. You can do so either by telephone, letter or email.

If you are interested in ordering some research from the Centre for Kentish Studies, check our research service page.

Please note: Due to recurrent problems with our online booking and research request system, that facility is temporarily unavailable. If you have made an online booking within the last month and have not received a personalised reply (excluding the automated acknowledgement) please contact us again. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
