29th Regiment Worcester
« on: Monday 10 July 06 17:02 BST (UK) »
Hi, hope someone can help me out.  Any information on the attached pic regarding date, uniform or medals would be kindly appreciated.

This is a photograph of my GG grandfather Richard Gibbons.  The info I have is he was a sergeant in the 29th Reg (Worc) born 1820 Sapperton Glos and died around 1896 in Wickwar Glos.  Think it maybe around the 1860's, also think one of the medals maybe for the 1st or 2nd Sikh wars?

Would be grateful for any input or suggestions from the buffs

Many thanks

Cas

Brilliant photo!
Between the end of the Peninsular War in 1814 and the start of the Boer War in 1899, the only campaign service that the 29th were involved in were:
1st Sikh War 1845-46 (battles of Ferozeshah & Sobraon)
2nd Sikh War 1848-49 (battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat)
Indian Mutiny 1857-58

Neither of the 2 medals in the photo looks like the Indian Mutiny, so my guess would be Sutlej Campaign medal (for 1st Sikh War) with no bar and Punjab Campaign medal (for 2nd Sikh War) with bars for Chilianwala and Goojerat.

A word of explanation for the Sutlej medal. In this case, the name of the first action the recipient was present at was inscribed on the reverse of the medal. Bars were then awarded for subsequent actions. So the fact there are no bars here would still mean he was either at Ferozeshah or Sobraon.

Thanks Neil, brilliant stuff, is there anywhere that would hold records this far back? Nothing at Kew for the dates I need for this reg.

The regimental archives held at the museum would be a great place to start. They welcome enquiries (sure they'd be able to confirm his medal entitlement for one thing).

Hi,

Yes the attached photo was restored on the photoboard first.  The original is there under 29th Reg.  They advised me to post here for possible info on it from you buffs.

I posted the restored one, not the original, as I thought it would be better to view.
