I'm hoping all this is fitting together with Joseph as the connection .. ..

Here are Rachel and William in 1851 living with someone who appears to be their maternal grandmother:

1851 census:
HO107/2219, folio 271, page 31

Lancashire, Rusholme
Birch Fold Farm Cottage

Rachel Cotterell, h. widow, 63, Laundress, b. Lancs, Longridge
Martha, dau. unm, 38, Laundress, b. Lancs, Pendlebury
Alice, dau, unm, 36, Laundress, b. Pendlebury
Mary, dau, unm, 33, Laundress, b. Pendlebury
? unm, 16, ditto, b. Lancs, Pendleton
Rachel Lowe, granddau, 7, Scholar, b. Rusholme
William Lowe, grandson, 5, Scholar, b. Rusholme

I'm sorry about the bottom part but the return form is quite badly marked and therefore illegible in places!  :-\

1851 census:
HO107/2219, folio 237, page 67

Lancashire, Rusholme

Thomas Lowe, h. mar, 35, Baker & Flour Dealer, b. Cheshire
Rachel, wife, 21, b. Lancs, Pendlebury
* b. Rusholme
Thomas, 2, b. Rusholme

I'm afraid we aren't having a lot of luck with the images - this one is so faint I can hardly read it at all? The name and age of the eldest child is totally illegible .. ..

Hi Dave,

I don't mind in the slightest - thankyou so much - I've just spent ages squinting at the form!
As for the birthplace of William that was a typing mistake and I will amend it straight away!

I'm just wondering whether Thomas married twice or Mary's name might have also been Rachel?

I see there's a possible marriage in 1840 for a Thomas Lowe and Rachel Cottrell .. ..

Marriage Sept qtr 1840
Rachel Cottrell
Thomas Lowe
Manchester, Vol 20, page 562

Cheers,

Pels  :)
