Bengal Merchant (1839-40) William McDOWALL ++ COMPLETED ++ Thanks to all
« on: Sunday 22 February 09 14:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I've recently found out that my ggggrandfather William McDOWALL (b 17 May 1801 Penninghame, Scotland) sailed on the Bengal Merchant from Glasgow to Wellington, with his wife Clementina and children Jessie and Robert.

Jessie, my gggrandmother returned to England around 1872, and married a soldier in the Household Cavalry (Charles Farrow)

William appears to have been a scientific instrument maker (at least in Edinburgh). I would be very grateful if anyone knows what became of William, Clementina and Robert.

Many thanks

and maybe your William on a jury list, 1850

I have a copy of 'From The Thistle To The Fern published in 2005. It traces the descendants of the McDowall family, from 1796 to 2005. It was given to me by my mother, who was fifth generation from  the landing in Petone, aboard the Bengal Merchant.

A large model of the Bengal Merchant is in the Petone Settlers Museum, on the waterfront close to where they landed, at 160 The Esplanade, Petone.

The book is very good and is a result of much research by, Steve McDowall (6th gen) & Dale Hartle who are the Authors, with help from many others. It describes a lot of the lives of the earliest generations and lists all known descendants born up until 2005. If you would like more info on this, there is a phone number listed in the book that I could pass on, or you could look for another copy.
The ISBN is 0-473-10362-1
It would be nice to hear from anyone interested.
