Pebbles Kernow Scavenger Hunt... Everyone Welcome To Join In
« on: Tuesday 18 January 11 09:26 GMT (UK) »

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt and we have some very elusive information indeed - but I'm sure you'll find it.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Barbara

                       ***************************

George Brind married Maria Ostler in 1874, in Reading, Berkshire.

On censuses after this time I have found him with Maria and their children.

He consistently gives his birthplace as the Channel Islands, sometimes Jersey, but mainly Guernsey.
The birth year (according) to censuses is between 1852 and 1855.

The details on his marriage certificate state that he was 21 in Mar 1874, Maria was 22. It also gives his occupation as Book-keeper.
His father is given as Thomas Brind, Book-keeper.

I would dearly love to know more about him, especially who his parents were and where and when he was born.

Thanks you very much for all and any help

Hi All

"Inconsiderate" is quite polite to what I have thought of him over the past year or two!!

The 1871 one which jamajo found is the only one I have found, and I'm claiming him  ;)

But as you have all found, a lack of Brinds in the Channel Islands.

Talking to dad earlier he reminded me that there is a family story that the name was reported to be Cooper Brind until about 1930, when the Cooper was dropped. (Not heard that story for about 30 years so maybe I can be forgiven for forgetting it)

Not sure if that helps or hinders.

Thanks again for trying to find his parentage

Pebs

statutory registration began in the guernsey, jehou, herm in 1840 these are held at the royal court house in st peter port only searchable on payment of a fee  :-\ you may be able to hire the microfiche into your family history (lds) centre for a smaller fee  :)
registers in aldernay from 1850 (marriages 1886 onwards) are held at St Anne after 1925 these are also held in Guernsey there is a gap during ww2 because of Nazi occupation and some earlier ones may be damaged because of this.
if they came from Sark the registers only began there in 1915 and marriages from 1925 .
civil registration began in Jersey in 1842 and the records are with the superintendent registrar in St Helier a 5 year pre paid search can be undertaken by staff if you provide the date of the relevant person and the name
