Good Luck and Good Hunting

Barbara

                              *******************

Charles Clarke was born about 1812 in St Pancras. (my 3x great grandfather)In 1841 Charles is a Clogmaker, in 1851 a Brick labourer and in 1869 when James got married a Bricklayer.

Father is John Clarke born about 1770 in Somerset died 1863 in St Pancras - occupation postman

Wife is Ann Challoner married Charles April 1841

Children
Charles Clarke bap Mar 1842
Jane Clarke bap May 1845 died Oct 1845
James Clarke bap 1847 St Pancras (my direct line) so a fair amount known
Henry Clarke bap 1849 St Pancras

A lot of the info I have is from the IGI and I have also found them on the 1841 and 1851 census

I have been unable to find any birth records for any of the children.  I actually sent off for about 3 certs for James about the same time in the right area and all proved wrong.

By the time James married in 1869 Charles appears to have dropped the e

All help greatly appreciated

Have you seen the actual baptismal entries? they may have dates of birth or babies' age at baptism or street address to give some more details.  You could then look in street directories or the Gale newspaper archive to see what was happening in those places in the mid-1840's
Perrins - Manchester and Staffs
Honan - Manchester and Ireland
Hogg - Manchester 19 cent
Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester
Comer - Manchester and Galway

Bookmarking even!

My first thoughts were that’s a long way to go from Somerset to London to become a postman were there no jobs near to him?

There are details for postman at the postal museum
 http://postalheritage.org.uk/

I would have thought a clog maker was a skilled occupation as opposed to a labourer were people just not buying clogs anymore?

Do you know when Charles died?
Do you only have the 1841 & 1851 census for Charles (and Ann?)
