Uniform
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 15:30 BST (UK) »
Hi there
Can anyone help me with the Uniform in the photo.
I am trying to establish if this is a picture of my great grandfather. He served in the RGA in WWI but was killed in action in 1917.
I was wondering the possible date of this photo and what this uniform is. Can anyone help shed any light?
many thanks lovely people
Sophie

This is the uniform of the Royal Artillery around 1890, possibly before, blue colour with a pill box hat with a gold band around. The crossed guns on his sleeve with Victorian crown above is a trade badge within the regiment signifying master gunner or gunlayer.

Someone will come along and give you precise date from the way the pic is mounted  and the ladies dress style.

I have put a link on the Photograph Recognition board, hopefully someone will be able to date your pic precisely by the ladies fashions

Oh that is wonderful - thank you so much. Hmm so I wonder what he was doing in the military then. He was in regular employment as a blacksmith striker in 1911 before going to war in 1914. Any ideas??

I assume he is Frederick Rusgrove SR/2593 (Special Reserve).

Where was he in 1901? There is plenty of time for him to have served as a Regular and been on the Reserve by 1911, followed by joining the Special Reserve when his time was up.
