Chithead's Scavenger Hunt...Everyone Welcome To Join In
« on: Tuesday 16 October 12 10:24 BST (UK) »

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt...... Chithead is hoping you can solve this dilemma for her.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Barbara

                                        *******************

The oral story is James Clarke 12-13yrs of age arrived aboard the Susannah 1849-05-16  in South Australia. Marriage certificate 1859 lists father as Richard Clarke and born in Scotland. R/C Gadget found for deeiluka a listing for Jame's father in 1841 census as follows:

Richard Clarke 38 linen bleacher
Kynoch? 37
Eliza 10, linen spinner
Margt, 8
James, 4 at 58 Hadden Street, Woodsie, Old Machar Aberdeen, No further ref's after that date.
amv228 found Marriage of
Richard Clarke
Kenard Henderson 1829-06-18

Births
Isobel Clarke to above parents 1830-05-15 (wonder if mistake made about her name 1841 census like her mother's name)
Margaret Clarke 1831-12-18

Haven't found Jame's Birth listing, or any ref to fatal coach accident am half way thru Aberdeen Journal's, local rag at that time, for period covering 1841-1849 to see if any ref to the accident that killed Jame's parents.

These dates fit ages and time frame so far.

Hope this helps appreciate the assistance.

This link will help to confirm that Isabel can be interchangeable with a variety of names that a non-Scot may not remember.

http://www.whatsinaname.net/

"The site is currently being developed. It was started when we found that many forenames in Scotland were interchangeable in ways not obvious to a non-Scot. Many people know that Jane is the same as Jean and Elizabeth is the same as Isabel/Isobel in Scotland, but did you know that Patrick and Peter are often interchangeable?"  (quoting from a part of a paragraph on that link)

Cheers,  JM

Thanks majm yes Isobel is interchangeable with eliza as its a shorten form of Elizabeth. Has any one else notice how names run in families my sister has same name as  one of my G/G/Aunt and they where born same month & date and we have Richard's and James  in the family as well without knowing this connection.

Could someone help me with the name of the Methodist Church in the Woodside Old Machar Aberdeenshire area? I've found 23 headstones within the 1841-1849 period for Richard & Kenard  Clarke but as not familiar with the area don't know which records to check or which church  is which denomination. This  would help confine the search to only relevent records. This is presuming they where Methodist as James Clarke was.. :)

I'll be following this thread with interest. For those who would like more information as to the previous Rootschat thread to which Gadget contributed, it was the Old Bible Challenge thread.

Hi,

Just wanted to add the only things I could find ...

Kenny Henderson, chr. 8th July 1793 Old Machar, parents John Henderson & Anne Green

This is out from the 1841 census so either that has been mistranscribed or she was older than was thought; c. 10 years.  :-\ It's possible there's a later child with the same name as well.

Kenny Henderson, wife of Richard Clark, labourer of Woodside, was buried 15th April 1848 at Old Machar.

No cause of death given but the above would suggest Richard still living at that point.

hume :)
