Title: Death of Catherine Rowcliff about 1860
Post by: kerryb on Saturday 20 February 10 15:25 GMT (UK)
Hi

Don't know if anyone is able to help.  I am looking for the death of Catherine Rowcliff/e in Osceola, Polk, Wisconsin.  I have a copy of the 1860 census and there is a child, 3 months old, Charles.  Her husband Stephen is alone with the children.  By the 1870 census he has married again.

I would really like to trace Catherine's death if anyone is able to help.

Hi Lissa

thanks for that, useful site, at least two of the sons mentioned there.

Stephen's 2nd wife died in 1904 and as I have not found Stephen on later census he could well of died in 1909.  I discovered on a google search today a mention of him (if indeed it is him) as the village clerk for Osceola.

Hi Lissa

according to the census records I have found there was an Ellen born 1862.  So yes she fits.

I looked for more yesterday but nothing more to add to the puzzle yet.   Will try again today.

Hi Lissa

Today I received a copy of  the obit for Stephen Rowcliffe from the Wisconsin Historical Society.  What a brilliant organisation that is, all the way from America and it only took a few days to come and I didn't have to pay postage!

anyway really useful biog about Stephen including that his first wife Catherine died in 1866, so my guestimate was a few years out.

Hello.  I am looking for this Stephen Rowcliffe's parents, specifically, his mother's maiden name.  Somewhere on line, I once found the father's name was Thomas (lost the source), and I also had the mother's name as Elizabeth Sanders or Saunders (but again, no source).  My ancestor is Stephen's sister.  I appreciate knowing when Catherine died; the second wife's name was Lucy A.  (1880 census, U.S.)  Recently I discovered on line that Stephen, with Elizabeth and possibly another Rowcliffe (Keats?) came to the U.S. in 1856 and that Elizabeth died shortly thereafter, on 1 Dec 1856, and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Osceola, Wisconsin--52 when she died.  She and Stephen were briefly mentioned in a book, The Quiet Adventurers in North America.  Stephen also played a role in the early days of Osceola.  The age settled the matter for me that this Eliz. Rowcliffe was Stephen's mother, not his sister, and thus my ancestor's mother as well.  Does anyone know her maiden name--or enough more info that we could find a marriage record in England?  Was this family really from Devon?

Thanks.  I'm so new at this, I don't know how to sign myself!
