hello,I hope im putting this in the correct place, its my first posting.
my interest is the irish war of independance/civil war.i have read through all the postings on the civil war threads in the last week and found them very imformative.
I have a original photo of 23 men interned in ballykinlar camp probley taken in early 1921 and quite similer to the one to be found on the back of the book My dear Eva by Peader Kearney and likley to be taken on a camera apparently smuggled into ballykinlar camp.
In the photo is a gentleman called John Kelly who im trying to research.he was from no 9 lock,Clondalkin,Dublin.I also have a DORA document for him signed 16 dec 1920 along with a rather strange metal disc which i can only describe as a ID disc or medallion.this has a lot of personal info on it,name, religion, blood group ect.this i have been told was something some volunteers did as a personal thing,ie made themselves. He may have been a minor figue and John Kelly is a common name in dublin let alone Ireland.any where i try to reasearch him comes up blank.he looks quite young in the photo and i have 2 or entys in the 1911 census and hes likley to be one of them.
Back to the photo.it has all 23 men named on the back 10 of whom are from dublin. These may be of interest to someone researching the dublin brigades/volunteers.the names are M Whelan,D Reilly,W Norris,W Reilly,J Kelly,G Byrne,J lynch,D Buthler(not to clear)G Treacy,T O Keefe.as mentioned theres another 13 mens names from various parts of ireland.
There is also 2 named as english a M Matthews and a S Sinnott.I would have thought they had a hard from from the authoritys.Does anyone know any more re english volunteers in the irish war of independance or these 2 in general.
I have lost contact with the woman who gave me these items so im up against a wall trying to find out more.would be happy to email pics to anyone whos tying to id people or get names ect for volunteers.
