I was wondering if a Charles WAGON b around 1833 in East Malling, Kent could be found in the 1841 or 1851 censuses. I don't have too much on him. By 1861 (and the two subsequent decades) he is married and living in Maidstone. He married in Dover.
The IGI has
Charles WAGGON
b. 29 APR 1832 East Malling, Kent, England
Parents:
Father: ROBERT WAGGON Family
Mother: ANNE
There seem to be several spelling variations of WAGON possible: WAGHORN; WAGGON; WAGGEN., etc.
Just fishing at this point!
much thanks,

The Kent Archaeological Society have transcribed the Tithe award schedule for many Kent villages

For East Malling there are 2 WAGON/WAGGON households
R WAGGON and W WAGON living next to each other in a cottage with garden

Hi
A possible ...
A search on the christian name only (Charles) born 'Malling' in any year brought up a Charles Hagon. He is a servant in the household of Henry Ballard (and wife Amy + young family), 44, tallow chandler & grocer Master employing 5 men, all born Maidstone.
1851 HO107/1617/158/7
17 Stone St, Maidstone, Kent
Charles Hagon, servt, unmar, 19, grocers assistant, b. East Malling
Ellen Hatcher, servt, unmar, 16, general servant, b. Harrietshaw?, Kent
The 'H' looks more like an H than a W, but is not as well formed as other 'H's on the page.

Thank you all! Thank you for your time and effort!
I think all the information looks promissing.
Charles WAGON was grocer connected, later a grocer's accountant/clerk, so even the Charles Hagon looks like it could be a match.
I like your strategy, koromo, for looking; just shows (once again) that there can be many paths to a destination, and it's not always the most obvious that will get you there! That's what makes puzzles so fun!
For 1841, if Robert & Ann are in fact Charles' parents, I think there may be other siblings not mentioned with the family in the 1841 census , perhaps they had died or werer working out of the home as servants/domestics, for I found on the IGI possible siblings for Charles:
Ann WAGGON Christening: 01 JUN 1828 East Malling;
George WAGGON Christened 18 JUL 1830 East Malling;
James WAGGON Christening: 18 JUL 1830 East Malling...

Hi ard
Pity the strategy doesn't always work - it didn't help me find George b. 1830. However, I did find Richard et al in 1851

Thanks again, Koromo.
I wonder if Robert and/or his wife were gone by 1851.
Hard to say what the relationship between Richard and Robert is; he's too old to be his son but youngish to be his brother... but definately family. Some of Charles' children were also in the paper business.
It's so nice when things fit!

Oh, you beat me to it! :D Thanks for looking!
I'll have to look into Snodland too.
The site that Bearkat sent should prove helpful as well.
The fact that in 1841 the head is Robert snr, one might assume that there is a son Robert there somewhere in the family too.
;D fun stuff.

I just want to say that, with those bits of information, I think I have managed to go back a couple generations (using the IGI)
to the parents of the Robert who married Ann.
Robert and Margaret MIDDLETON had about 8 children between 1780 & 1796. Oddly, for the date of their marriage and for some of the births of the children, there were two separate batch numbers that had dates that differed from 1 day to 2 weeks, though everything else matched! The children were: William, Robert, Mary,Margaret, Sarah, Thomas, John and Richard. Robert and Richard are the two that have been identified in census information passed on to me ;)
I've identified 12 children for Richard and his wife Phoebe, only a two or three of which I was able to find in the 1881 censuses.
Robert's children were tricker but I think these are correct, (the place Snodland being helpful here, since the first 5 of the 9 were born there under various spellings of Wagon/waghorn) Again only 4 appeared in the 1881 census.
Perhaps some went to America or elsewhere; some of the next generation did, anyway.
And so I thank you all again for helping me with the search!
