Title: local knowledge of Scarboro needed please
Post by: lesleyhannah on Tuesday 01 November 05 11:32 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for a disappeared relative - John Darling born about 1804 in Brompton by Sawdon. On the 1851 census I've found a John Darling born 1802 but gives his birthplace as Santon. Can anyone tell me if the 2 places are close?

Thanks

According to autoroute, the distance between Brompton and Scarborough is 7.5 miles

Catherine  :)
(Brompton and Sawdon are shown as two separate villages a short distance apart on autoroute)
Could "Santon" be a mistranscription for "Sawdon"?

Thanks - the writing looks quite clear, but I did wonder whether the enumerator (or whoever it was) misheard the local dialect. Wouldn't be the first time I've been caught like that!
cheers

Ganton could be misheard as Santon. Ganton (well known golf course) is about four miles SE of Brompton on the other side of the Derwent Valley.

John, I think you may have cracked it. Looking again at the original image it could easily be Ganton - ancestry have transcribed it as Santon. Forgive me, I don't know this area at all, and haven't had time to look up the map, but I'm assuming this means it cannot be my Scarborough ancestor.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

Hi

Sorry I missed this one - I have been away on holiday.  It could of course be Ganton but my guess would be Snainton which is just over a mile from Brompton.

Brompton and Snainton are also on the same main road (the A170) whereas Ganton is on the A64.

Hope this helps

Thanks Ticker - I'd actually written it off. I'll go back to ancestry and have another look at the original. I can't find another John Darling, so I'd REALLY like this one to be mine!
Thanks again, Lesley

Hi Lesley

No problem  ;)

Do you have a definite entry in the 1861 census for him?

Best wishes
