Is anyone able to help me please?. I am looking for the family of George Cowie who was born in Rathven in 1813. He was married to Jane Thompson and at the time of the 1871 census they were living with their family at Heigh Street, Elgin. I would be really grateful for any information. :) Many thanks

The International Genealogical Index (IGI) at www.familysearch.org lists the following children of this couple, who were married at rathven on 12 July 1845:
Margaretta, baptised 4 December 1845, Rathven
Jane, baptised 4 September 1847, Rathven
Martha, baptised 18 December 1849, Edinkillie
Robert, baptised 12 March 1852, Edinkillie
Anne, baptised 11 April 1854, Edinkillie
George, born 21 May 1856, Edinkillie
Eliza, born 30 October 1860, Edinkillie
Annabella Grant, born 18 May 1863, Edinkillie
Charles Mitchell, born 15 July 1864, Edinkillie
Emily, born 20 October 1866, Edinkillie
Williamina Thomson, born 7 December 1868, Elgin
So you can see that they must have moved from Rathven to Edinkillie between 1847 and 1849, and from Edinkillie to Elgin between 1866 and 1868. So they ought to be in Edinkillie in both 1851 and 1861.
You can look up the 1861 census online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
The 1851 isn't online yet, but the Aberdeen and North-East Scotland Family History Society http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/ has produced an index which is available to members and on CD-ROM.

Re the Cowie family.
I can add that the one daughter of George Cowie and Jane Thompson who was also named Jane Cowie, born 1847, and she married Charles Cumming Bruce Mitchell who was born on 22 April 1842 at Dunphail in the parish of Edinkille, Scotland. Shortly after her marriage in 1864 in Relugas they migrated to Australia to join her brother in law, James Mitchell's family in Queensland in 1865. Then three years later Jane and Charles WALKED from Queensland to Victoria to join another of Charles family his sister, Mary in Warrnambool , Victoria. This journey took nearly 3 years. They finally settled in Gippsland at a place called Trafalgar. They had 10 children Their first child Margaret died in infancy. The rest survived. Descendents are in both Victoria and Queensland. Jane remarried in 1900 when 52 after the death of Charles in 1888 from facial cancer. She is buried at Trafalgar cemetery under the name Jane Mulcahy. My wife is a descendant of Charles C.B.Mitchell being one of many great grand children.
Hope you find our about other family members.

Thank you for this information - it is amazing and quite unexpected. I had no idea that any of the family went to Australia! I thought that my great-grandfather's move from Edinkillie to Chester was the biggest migration they made! If I find out any more I will certainly be back in touch. Thank you again.

re 1861 & 1851 look-up cowie family
Pleased to be able to add a bit to your research
Hopefully attached is a photo of Jane Cowie or Jane Mitchell as she was then. The photo being circa 1890. I'm not too sure how to do this but here goes. If it doesn't work and you'd like the photo perhaps you can make a suggestion

Thank you very much for this information Rhona. I'm slowly building up a picture of the family - it's like doing a jigsaw. I didn't know anything about Robert, other than his name on the census returns, so this has added a new piece for me. :)

Just found this posting. George Cowie (born 21 May 1856) was my great, great, great grandfather, are roots go back to his son Charles Albert, we lived in Chester until the early 1970's and strangley I now have a son also salled Geroge. I have various census returns, somewhere a picture of George etc.

Hello Faster! Nice to meet you! My grandfather, Joseph Alexander Cowie, was one of Charles Albert's younger brothers. As George Cowie (born 21 May 1856) was my great grandfather - I'm guessing you and I are a couple of generations apart - but we are still related somehow! I have done quite a lot of research on George Cowie (18 October 1818) and there is an Australian branch of the family! I will send you an email so that we can take this conversation further!

Got your message but can't reply as apparently have to make 3 posts first! So will do a few more replies! I have numerous census records, copy birth certificates from Georges Father (James), down through George, to Charles Albert (1878 to 1955), to Charles Kenneth (1907 to 1982), then my father and me! I will let you have more details when I can send you a personal message.
