Mmm pity you don't have a DUNSDON. I'm quite interested in them because nearly 100% of them lived, died and married in Barking, Essex. I've traced them back to the 1700s, so I'm quite proud :)

Hi
I have the surname Allen, not in Stebbing, but in Great Dunmow which
is only 5 kilometers away.
my family is
John Allen (age19) married Caroline Sutton (age 18) (of Great Canfield) in 1844 in Dunmow, as of the 1861 census they had children; Sarah, Charles, Harriett, Elizabeth, Lydia and Alice (my connection).
so maybe somewhere along the line...??
Tara
-
Hello :) ... thanks for the reply :)
Although over 100 years after my ALLEN it is still interesting. William WHITEHEAD married 1732 Little Dunmow Essex a Sarah ALLEN ... all children were born in Stebbing. Where WHITEHEAD and ALLEN were born I have no idea :(

I've noticed the Playle name crop up lots of times in Essex under various spellings. This is one that I have made a note of because the lady's husbands don't seem to last too long, if it's the same lady throughout...

I wonder if they are the parents of John born 1836?

Hi feldemar and tarajobrien,
I'm search for my allen roots as well. Mines as close to essex as you can be and not be, born in Glemsford near Sudbury in 1833/34 name of James. No details of parents so far but traced to Burnham, essex in 1861 where he married a local girl, then Stratford St Mary in Suffolk in 1871 (thanks Chris in 1066land) and 1881 before moving to Norwich, Norfolk. I found quite an enclave of Allens in Glemsford in the 1881 census.
-
Snap,
I have Playles, Nunns, and Barretts in my tree, see my entry Nunns of Essex.
Mainly all Maldon BMD registered apart from Pre 1837which are Parishes off Bradwell,Tillingham,Steeple and Dengie.
We should liase?

I'm very new to this so please forgive me if I seem simple. I am trying to trace my fathers line. we have always used the name Playle as a surname. My grandfather was divorced and estranged when my father was 19 so I didn't know much about him. After unsuccessfully searching for him on the 1891 census and BMD I decided to search for his marriage (which I knew the date of) He was listed as a PLAYL I have since found his father who came to Grimsby on a fishing vessel, (also listed as Playl) (1881 census) He was John Playl A.B Seaman aged 18, Unmarried, Birthplace Maldon Essex, Address "Cambria" Gt Grimsby Lincoln England.
PRO ref RG11/3277 Folio 123 Page - FHL film no. 1341781
(I have no idea yet what the last figures mean but I am hoping someone can tell me.) He eventually married an Ellen Elizabeth who was a year older but either was at sea (on a different Trawler) or dead by the time of the 1891 survey.
Please forgive my ignorance, I have probably missed something that seems obvious to a seasoned researcher. Thank you for reading this message.
-
Hallo and welcome to Rootschat. I think the number 1341781 is the number of the film you have to quote to the Latterday Saints if you wish to view the film at one of their centres. Alternatively (if you can reach these places in UK) you can view the film at the Family Record Centre in London or at Essex Record Office in Chelmsford.
I looked in 1891 Census. I could not find any John PLAYL who matched your details but at RG12/2613 folio 94 pages 21 and 22 parish of Saint James, Grimsby 14 Annesley Street I found
Arthur PLAYLE Head Married 28 Fisherman born Maldon, Ess?
Alice PLAYLE wife Married 22 born Spilsby, Lincs
Arthur PLAYLE son 1 born Grimsby Lincs
Henry PLAYLE son age 3 mths born Grimsby Lincs
I could not find Ellen Elizabeth PLAYL but in 1901 Census RG13/3092 folio 72 page 18 in parish of St Andrews, Grimsby 29 Garibaldi Street I found
Ellen Elizabeth PLAYLE Head Married 38
John Wm PLAYLE son S 17 packing box maker
Alfred PLAYLE son 13
Lizzie E PLAYLE dau 11
Charles PLAYLE son 1
They were all born in Grimsby
I couldn't figure out for sure which particular person you were trying to find but I hope this helps
-
Thank You, Yes this is a help. Ellen Elizabeth is indeed the mother of my grandfather john William. The spelling of playle with or without the "e" seems to be optional whichever source you look. John William appears to have been Born without the "e", Married without the "e" yet did his service and died with the "e" Arthur Playle is the brother of John Playl. My father knew his grandfather came on the trawlers with his brother and they both settled in Grimsby, Giving rise to
-
Sorry my computer crashed! ..rise to all the playles in the modern Grimsby area. Arthur and his family being more prolific than John. I can only assume That John Playl was at sea during the 1901 census, or possibly dead although I haven't yet found his death record. Thank you for taking the time to read my post Lesley

It's likely that you already know this but this name crops up quite a lot in Essex searches and its variant includes PLAIL

Eva Heard b.1888 is my paternal grandmother. Sarah Jane Gowers b.1859 is my paternal great gramdmother. Maybe we have similar research. Regards N.
-
Thanks for the reply :)
Your people are a bit late form me :)
in 1791 Ann Gower married William Whitehead, Ann was baptised in Stebbing Essex in 1762.
Martha Heard was born approximately 1735 and married Richard Pawsey in 1756 in Wethersfield.
Both of these lines are brickwalls.

Feldelmar,
Not sure when you first posted your message with your interests but I am trying to help a friend with his surname of SMOOTHY - have you come across any at BOCKING, Essex?
est a 'widow' on the 1891 named Sarah Smoothy with children
William , Minnie, Lily and Florence

Hello Cullen
sorry can't help I am sad to say ... my SMOOTHY's were 1690's when the line married into mine I ended research on that line.
I would suspect that you have checked Hugh Wallace's IGI site for the county of Essex and the town of Bocking.

Looks like you might have to ;)
Besides that ... its nice to know you have those ... I am stuck with my PLAYLE's and WHITEHEAD's ... but I can ask that favour after ... ;D

Its easier now i have a proper fiche reader than a hand held one because it's all hand written! Would be more than happy to help you out. Just let me know what or who you are looking for and i will look for you.

Jane
-
;D
we are a good pair ... I have the fiche reader but no fiche!!!!
I guess if you wouldn't mind sending me the info on both WHITEHEAD and PLAYLE then I can piece together the puzzle. I understand that the records for Stebbing started late 1700's so that makes it a little difficult as I am not sure if my JOHN PLAYLE 1717 came from although they were millers there for centuries.
The PAWSEY's, PLAYLE's, WHITEHEAD,s BARKER's and FARRAR's seem to have married on and off through the years into the same families which makes it a bit hard at times. >:(

Hello Wendy ... sorry ... my Essex names are from Stebbing ... that I know of. I have not had much success with those lines. This is not to say that they did not come from other areas however, they did end up in Stebbing.
Although I have had some help just recently with my PLAYLE line.

Hi Fedelmar,
I have just come across your post, as i have just found a connection to the Playl/Playe family in my own tree. They are not from Stebbing though but from Writtle (which is not about 12 miles away).
My connection is through my great (x3) grandmother Louisa Playl, who was born in approx 1828 in Writtle. I know from her marriage certificate in 1852 to George Camp, that her father was a John Playl, who was a labourer, and that one of the witnesses was a Sarah Playl (who i am assuming was a sister). I have not been able to positively locate Louisa, John or Sarah on the 1841 or 1851 census, but i do have a possible family in 1851 of an Elizabeth with 2 daughters Louisa & Sarah living in Ingatestone, all from Writtle but with Louisa's birth out by 3 years.
Have you come across any of this family in your research, even though it is slightly outside your area ?
Thanks
Richard

My Sorrells lived around Boreham in Essex. My husbands Great Grandfather George Sorrell went to sea in 1860 aged 16 and sailed all over the world. I have a book written by him with accounts of the ships he sailed on. He spent some time in Australia He married twice first to Grace Willis and then Maraget Waring. He had 3 children with Grace . Please let me know if there maybe some connection.

Hi Neil
My message did vanish whilst I was typing it, took me a while to get it back, who knows what happens to these things !! Thanks for that info though very interesting, our Sorrells have two Rs and two Ls and after being sailors became Correspondence Clerks not Goveners. The other side of the family were fismongers or builders, nothing exciting.
Thanks for your reply anyway.

I have a Hannah Plail / Playle born about 1806, according to various census returns in Asheldam, Essex.
Has anyone got any links to this Playle? I did a search for her a couple of years back in the parish registers for Asheldam, but could not find her - I have not yet searched the surrounding villages though.
Hannah married William Whent on 4th October 1829.

Hi,
It would seem that there were quite a few PLAYLEs around that area I have an Ann PLAYLE who married John CABLE in 1790 and they lived in Stock which is in the same sort of area surrounding Malden Could be linked

Hi, I noticed on your surname list a Gower I am following up on a link to my GGGrandfather who married an Ann Green nee Gowers from around the Chelmsford area approximately in the early 1800s.
I have little info on them at the moment but will be posting more soon.

Hi,
The Hasler family were millers in Great Dunmow at one time. Until roughly thirty years ago the mill still stood next to the site of the railway station (both are now demolished). The local council built some sheltered housing for the elderly on the site and called it Alan Hasler House.
My grandmother lived there until her death some fifteen years ago, having been a Great Dunmow resident since before WW2.

hi everyone
there is a website that has got the playle names and place of birth
I hope this website can be of help to anyone who has got playle from in their family tree.
