Title: Place name SANTERS? in Gloucestershire
Post by: Peter H on Friday 11 November 05 13:44 GMT (UK)
Can anyone with a local knowledge of Gloucestershire help me please?

I have traced my WELLS family in Coberley in Glos. in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses so far. (HO107/1972/folio 262 and RG9/1796/folio 45 respectively). My problem is deciphering the birth place of Maria, the wife of head James. It looks to me like Santers, Gloster on both records, but I cannot trace any such place in the county. Ancestry's transcriber also thinks it is Santers , for what that is worth.

Can anyone offer an explanation where her birth place was please? Was it perhaps a house or a very small hamlet that doesn't appear on any gazetteer I have used - or have I or the enumerator misread the location?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sue has it right for sure. It is Sandhurst which would sound very like Santers. In fact  if you try Santers in a West Country brogue it will be the same. :)
