Title: 1841 Essex Look up please

Hi I’m looking for 2 families around the dunmow area.

Family 1:
John Allen (maybe spelt Allan?) born Great Dunmow abt 1817
John's occupation labourer
Father William Allen – Shoemaker

Family 2:
Caroline Sutton born Great Canfield between 1818-1821
Caroline's occupation in later life is as a laundry lady
Father William Sutton – Labourer


John and Caroline married in Dunmow in 1844.  John would probably have been in living in Dunmow, Caroline either Dunmow or Canfield.

i'm afraid i don't have any information on mother's or siblings to help.

Hallo Tara,
Because you didn't specify which particular 1841 census you wanted checked I thought it best to look at the baptism registers:
Great Canfield baptism register microfiche D/P 346/1/5. This covered the period 1813-1880 and consisted of 2 fiche. I searched fiche 1 from page 1 (1813) up to page 25 (1830) and did not see any SUTTONs there.
There are quite a few named Button and I wondered whether a transcription error might be involved.
Great Dunmow baptism register microfiche D/P 11/1/7. This covered the period 1813-1838 and consisted of 3 fiche. I searched the whole of fiche 1 and fiche 2 up to page 145 (1831) and found just one ALLEN/ALLAN as follows:
page 47 May 23 1819 John son of William and Sarah ALLEN of Dunmow shoe maker. This may be your one.
Just in case it is significant to your line I also made a note of 3 baptisms in the name of ALLING:
page 34 January 11 1818 Charles
page 45 April 4 1819 Emma
page 64 July 22 1831 Charlotte whose parents were James and Margaret ALLING of Dunmow watchmaker.
There were quite a few Buttons in Dunmow too.

thank you! yes an enormous help, i'd say that John son of William and Sarah is the correct one - thank you very much for that  :). John's first daughter was called Sarah.

I have the marriage certificate for John Allen and Caroline Sutton and it is definitely Sutton - but will remember the 'Button' for future. On LDS site for IGI in the 1700's there are a few Sutton's from Canfield (but not the most reliable source!). In 1841 census i would guess that John Allen would be in Dunmow and Caroline either in Dunmow or Canfield.

Hi,

I have a few Button families in the Berden area of Essex.  They are quite clear to read and definitely Button.  So I think the Buttons refered to previously are a different family not a Sutton transcription error.  But you never know!.....

             There is an Alfred Allen   Shoemaker 35 in Hornchurch Essex  on the   kevw(.)net plus some others scattered around Essex.
