Title: O'HARA/TAYLOR/SMITH/MCTAGGART family - Glasgow
Post by: brandane on Thursday 24 November 05 23:54 GMT (UK)
Trying to find information on the following:

1. Rose Ann O'Hara (b.1837)  who was first married to Duncan McTaggart, after his death in 1864 Rose Ann married William Smith.  On the1871 census for 4 South Street, Partick, Glasgow, it states that Rose Ann (age 34) was born in Ireland, her husband William was born in ireland also. William also has a son William aged 13/14 on census however not Rose,s son.
What i would like to know is where did Rose,s children from her marriage to Duncan McTaggart go? They are Robert McTaggart b. 13/09/1859, Neil McTaggart b. 20/04/1857 and John McTaggart b. 12/07/1855. Were there any more children from marriage to Duncan McTaggart, were there children from marriage to William Smith?
Also unable to locate marriage certs and dates for marriage to Duncan McTaggart and William Smith.

2.Rose Ann O'Hara,s parents were Bernard O'Hara and Mary Taylor married 11th May 1817 at Barony Lanark. What children did Bernard and Mary  have and when and where in Ireland was Rose Ann born?

3. Regarding Duncan McTaggart- he died 30th August 1864 aged 40 so would be born around 1823/1824, unable to locate exact date of birth and place of birth. On death certificate states parents are Duncan McTaggart (deceased, occupation farmer) and Rachael McTaggart maiden name Taylor.
Any help would be appreciated ;D

Hi, I can't see the family in 1861 census index for Glasgow. Nor can I find any of the boys in 1881 census.
Son John McTaggart's birth cert. of 1855 will give you his parents date/place of marriage and also their place of birth.

Liz,
Followed all your advice. However on all the birth certificates for Robert, Neil and John McTaggart there is no date, time and place of marriage for  their parents Duncan  McTaggart and Rosie  O'Hara which i thought was very unusual.
I wonder if you may be able to explain something else. On John McTaggart,s birth certificate it states he was born 12th July 1855 but this registration does not appear until the 1860 birth register. This has kinda thrown me, i thought a child,s birth had to be registered within a specified time period.

Hi Brandane,
WOW, this is a new one on me. From 1855, registration became compulsory, regardless of religion.  Birth certs. from 1856-1860 did not have details of parent's marriage. Places and dates of marriage were re-introduced in 1861.  1855 was the 'Golden' year for births and marriages, as they had so much more  information on them.
Where did Duncan McTaggart die in 1864, was it Glasgow?
I'll have another look at 1861 index for Glasgow.

There's only one Duncan McTaggart who died in 1864.  He died Tradeston, Glasgow City.  There is a Duncan and Roseann in Tradeston in 1861 census index, but they don't fit what you have.  I see from IGI that Robert was born 1859, Tradeston. Roseann married William Smith in Tradeston in 1865, so I can't understand why they are not there. I'll give you the details of the McTaggarts in Tradeston, but going on what you say, it does'nt look like they are yours.

Census taken Tradeston  644/9  enum dist 5 page 8

Duncan McTaggert age 32 born Islay, ARL
Roseann age 33 born Islay
Malcolm age 12 born Islay

Hi Liz,
Thanks for trying for me, much appreciated. I wouldn,t be surprised if that was  my roseann who married william smith in 1865, can you let me know the details. i am beginning to think that roseann,s children from her first marriage may have went to be brought up by family members. the reason i think roseann came from ireland is that on the 1871 census, roseann and william are found in south street, partick and census states both are born in ireland. now what i find interesting is that roseann,s first husband died in 7 oxford lane, glasgow in 1864. in 1871 census roseann is at south street, but then on her death cert she is listed as having died at 7 oxford lane, glasgow. this makes me wonder if family members retained this tenancy.
the names malcolm mctaggart is in my tree also, malcolm was married to jane mckean and lived at 88 richard street in 1881 census(glasgow) my gggrandfather.

Hi Liz,
Checked out the marriage cert for William Smith and Rosann O'Hara  who were married on 10th February 1865. It is not the same Rosann or William but it is still interesting me. Particuarly as it states the parents of Rosann were James O'Hara and Mary Taylor residing at 9 Oxford Lane Glasgow. Now i dont know if related as my Rosann O'Hara,s parents were Mary Taylor and Bernard O'Hara and Rosann lived at 7 Oxford Lane, Glasgow. Possibly may be cousins.  The mystery continues.... ;D

Hi Brandane,
Where did you get the info. that her parent's names were Bernard O'Hara and Mary Taylor? If it's from her death cert. it may not be too reliable, informants often get it wrong.  Too many things add up, second husband's name, address, living in Tradeston, the only thing that differs is her father's name.
I'm curious as too where Malcolm fits in this, you say he is your gggrandfather. so where does Robert, John and Neil fit in?

Hi Liz,
Got Roseann O'Hara's  parentage from her death certificate, it is quite clear regarding parentage and also has marriage date. The other Roseann who married william smith is actually older and not in the age group that i am looking for.
Regarding Robert, Neil and John McTaggart, they are the children of Duncan McTaggart and Rosie O'Hara all validated by birth certs.
Malcolm McTaggart and Jane McKean are my great great grandparents, they had children Duncan, Mary, Roseann and Oneay.
The Duncan McTaggart and Rose O'Hara were Malcolm,s parents and thus are my great great great grandparents.
Hope this makes sense.
From what family have told me most of the McTaggart,s from anderston, tradeston are interrelated and thus makes it more confusing in terms of christian names. all of the christian names are still present within my family to date even though we are about 180years on.

Hi Brandane,

Have just spent about two hours typing a reply with information for you and have managed to lose it somehow before I was able to send.

Basic bones are that the family Liz found in 1861 are yours (the census address was 7 oxford Lane) and Rose did go on to marry William Smith in 1865. The three children, Neil, Robert and John (plus another  called Angus) all died before 1861, which is why they are not in the census.

Duncan and Rose were both born Argyllshire. 1861 census gives Islay for both, though 1881 says Rose (Ann) was from Cambeltown. Malcolm also appears to have been born on Islay (per 1861 and 1891 census), though the 1881 says he was born in Glasgow.

I will send another post with more details when I get more time.
Regards,
Isobel

Hi Isobel,
Thanks for your help, although it leaves me a little bit confused. Roseann O'Hara (McTaggart) who marrried William Smith is in 1871 census as having been born in Ireland. Are the census,s often wrong?
This leaves me more puzzled...
I did suspect a possible link on McTaggart side to either Islay or Campbelltown.
Can you tell me how you were able to confirm these details so i can look myself.

Hi Brandane,

I think you may be looking at the wrong 1871 census entry.

I have found the following:-

47 Muirhead Street, Hutchesontown, Glasgow

William Smith Lodger age 36 Harbour Labourer born Glasgow
Roseann Smith Lodger age 40 born Islay
Malcolm McTaggart Lodger age 20 Harbour Labourer born Islay

I am away over the weekend but will post the other information that I have found when I get back.

I'm not surprised you are confused, not least because both William and Roseann's ages vary wildly from record to record. To give an example - Roseann Smith/O'Hara died at 7 Oxford Lane in 1884 which is the same address that Duncan McTaggart died at in 1864 and she is described on the death cert.as having been married to both Duncan McTaggart and William Smith. But her age is given as 47 on the death certificate. Given that she was 33 in the 1861 census entry for 7 Oxford Lane, 40 on the 1871 census entry above, AND had a son (Malcolm) born around 1851, the age on the death certificate is obviously  very wrong.

Regards,
isobel Colliar
ps found a marriage for Bernard O'Hara and Mary Taylor in Glasgow in 1817, so suspect that these are the correct parents for Roseann as per the death cert. Her 1865 marriage gives her parents as James O'Hara and Mary Taylor. Same mother's name on both, but a confusion over father's name.

Hi Isobel,

Your entry makes sense and makes  me quite excited as i have come across a lady whom met one of my aunt,s on holiday. This lady who is a McTaggart, has traced the McTaggart,s who came from Islay back to the Jacobite rebellion. She was excited when she had heard some of the names in my tree and did advise me that most came from Islay  to Glasgow and Shotts in the 1840,s due to the Great Hunger which occurred in Islay at this time.
I look forward to seeing the rest of the info you have. Have a great weekend and thanks for your help.
brandane

P.S. I had got marriage details for bernard o'hara and wondered if the james o'hara was bernards brother. As you know often when husbands die the widow marries other relatives, well in my tree they have!!!!

In 1891 Malcolm and Jane were at 8 Bishops Street, Barony, Glasgow
Malcolm age 36 head  Boiler Maker born Argyllshire Islay
Jane age 35 born Lanarkshire Glasgow

Duncan 12 Scholar Lanarkshire, Glasgow
Malcolm 10 Scholar Lanarkshire, Glasgow
John 8 Lanarkshire, Glasgow
Jeannie 6 Lanarkshire, Glasgow
Robert 3 Lanarkshire Glasgow

According to your info. Duncan McTaggart above was born at 53 Richard Street in 1879. He married Agnes Freeman in 1898. They had a son called Matthew around 1924 whom you believe was a brother of  your grandfather Hugh Kerr McTaggart born around 1912. Does this mean that you think Malcolm and Jane (Mckean) are your g/grandparents. The reason I am confused is that your very first posting gave Hugh Kerr McTaggart’s father as Alexander McTaggart. What parents’ names were given on Hugh’s death certificate in 1962?

I also found a death certificate for Roseanne McTaggart above-

1922 21st February at 35 Nicholas Street, Glasgow
Roseann McAllister age 44 married to 1st John McDade, Cotton Worker, 2nd George McAllister, Riveter
Father Malcolm McTaggart, Boilermaker (deceased)
Mother Jane McTaggart m/s McKean (deceased)
Carcinoma of Uterus

I hope to get a visit to New Register House on the 16th. If you want I can try and check out some of the later records re. this family for you (ie the ones you can’t view on SP)

Isobel

Hi Isobel,
Thank you very much you have helped me so much. My first posting was actually wrong. Alexander McTaggart was also my grandfather,s brother. But all the family you listed are my relatives. Hugh Kerr McTaggart was my grandfather and his parents were Agnes Freeman and Duncan McTaggart, which has been validated via his marriage cert which his daughter (my aunt) has.
So the earlier Malcolm McTaggart  who married jane mckean is my great great grandfather and grandmother. His parents were my great great great grandparents.
I wonder if you could possibly find out my great great great grandfather,s date of birth and name of parents as i am stuck. Duncan McTaggart who was married to Rose O.Hara parents on his death cert were  Duncan McTaggart and Rachel McTaggart nee Taylor. I don,t know if he had any brothers.
Once again i cant thank you enough my dad is over the moon as he knew nothing about his father,s family.
with kind regards

Duncan McTaggart (son of Malcolm and Jane)died in 1949 and his wife Agnes McTaggart m/s Freeman died in 1931.

Duncan died on 29th June 1949 at 28 Lancefield Street, Glasgow, aged 70. He was the widower of Agnes Freeman and was a Foundry Labourer. Father Malcolm McTaggart, Boilermaker (dec’d) Mother Jane McTaggart m/s McKean (dec’d). Informant Rose McKee, daughter.

Agnes died on 12th May 1931 at 54 Grace Street, Glasgow. She was 55 and married to Duncan McTaggart, Foundry Labourer. Father Thomas Freeman, Ship Rigger (Dec’d) Mother Rose Ann Murphy (dec’d). Informant Duncan McTaggart, Widower.

I tried to find out a bit more about the parents of Duncan McTaggart who was married to Rose Ann O’Hara. As you know his death cert. gives his parents names as Duncan McTaggart, Farmer and Rachel McTaggart m/s Taylor. I have drawn a complete blank on this but have found a Malcolm McTaggart and Rachel Taylor having children in Islay at the appropriate time and wonder if a mistake has been made with the father’s name on the death cert.
Malcolm McTaggart, a son of Malcolm and Rachel, was married on Islay in 1857. He was 28 and both his parents are shown as deceased. He is shown as ‘previously of the parish of Houston, Renfrewshire’ Malcolm sen’r was a Farm ? (sorry can’t make it out- looks like Crook!) Another son, Alexander, died in Kilchoman, Islay in 1858 age 30. He was a single Blacksmith and died of Consumption. The informant was a brother, Neil.

Well that’s about it. Hope you can make something of all this. Need to go and get organised now for going back to work tomorrow. Have been off for more than a fortnight so not looking forward to it!

Hi Isobel,
Thanks for all the work you have done in assisting me in my family tree.
I think you are probably correct regarding Malcolm McTaggart and Rachel Taylor. I have long suspected that my family did originate in Islay and have often wondered where the christian names came from.
Good luck returning back to work i also went back after 2 weeks off.
cheers
Brandane

Hi Brandane:
I am wondering if you are still researching the McTaggart family?  I am researching on behalf of my cousin who is a direct descendant on the McTaggart-O'Hara line.  I was fascinated to read your blog exchange and clearly have followed all the same threads that I am pursuing.
I note that you were researching ten years ago plus.
Hopefully, I will hear from you.  With kindest regards, WilmaMcC.

Hi Wilma,
Nice to hear from you. I had to give up on it as couldn’t find any further information if I recall correctly. If I recall correctly I managed to get back to 1795 with a tenuous link to Galway.

Hi Brandane:
It is Wilma here again. My cousin who is descended from Matthew McTaggart your grandfather(?) Hugh's brother has asked me if there is a way to reach you on email?  If you are on Ancestry, we could exchange email addresses?  Perhaps there is another way.
Please let me know.  With thanks, WilmaMcC.

Hi Brandane:
Thought I'd reach out again to see if you would like me to put you in touch with my cousin?  Please let me know as she would very much like to be in touch with "lost" family members.  I can send you my email by the forum message service.  With thanks, Wilma
